Since I cannot find glands to add to my kitties food I decided to give the Nutricology ImmoPlex Glandular a try. I added one capsule per pound of chicken thigh meat/bones/skin. Because Gadget is a tad heavy and I have a somewhat irrational fear of urinary troubles with the boys, I add at least twice as much water than Dr. P asks for to the mix before portioning it out. The cats are eating their food heartily and seem to like the new supplement a lot, but I've noticed that someone is REALLY drinking water from the water bowl. The only change is the supplement. Should I be concerned? Everyone seems fine otherwise.

Oh, I'll explain my irrational fear of urinary troubles with the boys: these are my first male kitties and I've always heard males are more prone to urinary troubles. They have never had a problem, I'm just trying to be proactive about their health.

Hmm, I am not sure why the glandular supplement would cause excessive thirst. What's the sodium content? I am not familiar with that product.

I don't think male cats are more prone toward urinary issues. It's more that if there are issues, they can be more serious because they are more likely to block because of their physiology.

Yeah, I know my fears with the boys is irrational.
The ImmoPlex is the same one from the www.catnutrition.org recipe. It's thymus, pancreas, spleen, and adrenal glands. Other ingredients are hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and silicon dioxide. No breakdown of sodium and etc.

The other ingredients are the capsule.

The glandular should not be the cause of the increased thirst. :dk: Did you taste it to see if it tastes salty? None of those glands are particularly high in sodium, so I very much doubt it does taste salty.

I have sourcing issues AND issues with a number of my cats eating fresh organs. I use individual Nutricology glandular supplements instead. I use pancreas, spleen, beef brain, and thymus. My cats eat meals that range in size from 3 ounces daily to 4.5 ounces daily. Each of them gets one capsule of something every day (I rotate between the different types). On top of that, Chumley gets a thymus capsule sprinkled on his food every morning. None of my cats exhibited increased thirst after adding the capsules to their diet. :dk:

Thanks for that LDG. I can't find fresh glands to save my life. Even the ethnic grocers give me a disgusted look when I ask.

I didn't taste the food, but they are eating it more heartily. I kind of wondered about the possibility of a hormone being in the supplement and that throwing things off?

Curious, why does Chumley get extra thymus?

Yeah, even Hare Today doesn't often have fresh pancreas. :(

Chum gets the thymus daily because of his FIV. I can't afford the Thym-Uvocal, which is standardized / more concentrated and has all of the active peptides.

From: http://www.fivtherapy.com/bdmeds.htm

Thymus Peptides. The thymus is “home” to the T lymphocytes attacked by FIV and is damaged in the early stages of FIV infection. There they are biochemically outfitted for their functions (hence the “T”) and sent forth. Some research suggests that thymus peptides may be beneficial in HIV treatment by helping the thymus to enhance the activity of CD8+ cytotoxic lymphocytes that limit FIV. There have also been claims that they raise T-Cell counts generally, as well as counts of Natural Killer (NK) cells of the non-specific immune defense. I am indebted to Martina Menz for bringing some of this research to my attention. Studies of a variety of oral and injectable thymic products (Thymomodulin, thymic humoral factor (THF), Thymostimulin, Thymopentin, etc.) have generally found that resistance to opportunistic infection is enhanced, and that those in the earlier stages of HIV might be particularly benefited. Absorption from the intestines is not good. The question of whether oral thymus peptides activate the CD4+ lymphocytes targeted by FIV (thus making them vulnerable to attack) and should be administered in the absence of antiviral agents has not been definitively addressed, although one study of Thymomodulin found no enhancement of the urinary levels of neopterin, a marker of T-cell activation. (Bud’s Dosage: Thym-Uvocal, 48mg twice daily)
and

10. Varying degrees of damage to the thymus, home to T cells, characterizes all FIV infection. Thymus Peptides have demonstrated some ability to assist in production of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes and to potentiate the cell-mediated immune response generally. The extent to which relatively unrefined oral products affect T cell proliferation and cell activation is unclear. Whether a refined product such as Thymic Protein A, which has been shown to induce T cell proliferation via direct IL-2 stimulus, would be appropriate for an asymptomatic cat and if so by what treatment protocol, will have to await further study. Thymic “involution” (decline in normal functioning) occurs in FIV+ cats, so some type of thymic support makes sense. HIV research suggests that thymus peptides might be of particular usefulness early, when thymus function still exists to support, than late, when naive thymocytes are no longer being generated.
From the same site, but this page: http://www.fivtherapy.com/bdltimetherapy.htm#Asymptomatic Phase

Chumley is now 6 or 7 years old, and (still) asymptomatic (knock wood). :cross: He was most likely infected just prior to his being rescued by us, as he was treated for an abscess in his leg when neutered after we trapped him. :sigh: But that means he was likely infected at 3 or 4 years old.

I forgot that Chumley has FIV. That makes sense now. Do you have CD4/CD8 counts done on him? Any other type of lab work?

No, we never have. I've thought about it. We just take him for his annuals, get the extended (senior panel) blood work done, and get him his annual dentals (with anesthesia).

Update: the cats like their food even better than before! One, two, or all three of them are still drinking a lot of water but otherwise they seem fine.

Yeah, I know! I only added 1 capsule per pound of chicken, and I double the amount of water or more. It has been hotter outside lately, but the house is air conditioned and they are indoor only. I'll just keep watching them.

I have another question about this supplement. I order it from www.iherb.com and see that there is a California warning on it. That doesn't affect me here in GA but does anyone know specifically why that warning is there?

I do, and wrote to them about it. Let me go find the email.

OK, it's the "CA Prop 65" label warning. (Ever been to a hotel in CA? The list of warnings on the wall next to the door is funny. I don't remember what all warnings are on there, but... ).

Here's the email, and I'll send the attachments via PM to anyone interested, just let me know.

There are three attachments in all; the first is regarding a letter of intent to sue regarding our ProGreens product and the fact that the lead content (which is naturally occurring) exceeds CA Prop 65 allowable levels. According to CA Prop 65 Daily Limits for lead consumption cannot exceed 0.5 mcg. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) limit is 10 mcg daily, making it 20 times higher than the CA Prop 65 level. It is the upper end dose on all of our products that puts it over the 0.5 mcg daily limit, but still under the USP daily level of 10 mcg. For example if a products suggested use is 1 capsule 1 to 3 times daily it would be the three capsules daily that would exceed the 0.5 mcg CA Prop 65 limit but still meet the USP 10 mcg limit requirement. This initial letter regarding ProGreens prompted us to put this warning on all of our products for which the high end dose exceeded CA Prop 65 allowable levels of lead. If we did not sell our products in California or if we did not have a daily dose on our label we would not be required to have this sticker on our products. We wanted our customers to know the amount of each product that might serve as nutritional support and therefore made the decision to keep the “Suggested Use” on the label.

Please read all of the attached documents carefully so you can make an informed decision regarding what you ingest and whether or not it is dangerous.

When you consider the fact that our products, even at the high end level still contain less than approximately 2% of what is found in most foods in the US, where the danger lies or if it exists becomes questionable. It is true that lead and a variety of other chemicals are dangerous to our health and wellness but I think nutritional supplements of good quality might be less of a concern than some other exposures one might be unaware of.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.

The attachments were two letters to distributors, the third is information about the CA Prop 65. They're all PDF files.
