Hello everyone!

I'm new around here, so I thought I should introduce our family.

Until recently we only had one cat in our family, but right now we're at the inroduction phase with a new kitten. I came across with your site while I was trying to get info about that.

This is Peanut. Actually that's the english translation of her name. In our language her name is roughly pronounced as "fish-tick". She also has several nicknames like "khu-tzu", meaning "my lamb".

At the photo, she was about 7 years old. The lady who rescued her and her siblings when their mother died, told us that she was born on 21st June 1998 in Yalova, Turkey (in another thread I miscalculated and wrote that she's 17). I got her when she was 4 months old, and she's with me since then. Here's another pic of her:

At 2-4 years old, she had a roll of accidents/health problems. At first she burned her tongue by licking a cleaning solvent (our cleaning lady still fills guilty about the incident). Luckily, she didn't swallow the solvent, but her tongue was burnt and she hated the healing period. Then she fell from the balcony (birdwatching accident I suppose). The balcony wasn't high, but she cracked the roof of her mouth, and that healing period was also stressful. Then she had an ovary infection and had an operation for that (we couldn't have her spayed before that due to some other minor infections and allergies she had). At last she had some serious problems with her digestive system, and her large intestine had to be cut off with a serious operation. The success of such an operation is slim around here, but luckily we had a very proficient vet, and he probably saved her life.

Peanut was a sweet and somewhat lazy cat, but after this troubled period of vet trips and painful treatments, she became agressive, and for a very long time she refused to interact with anybody but me. She especially hates her vets, and even at house visits she quickly switces to her battle mode complete with battle cries, sharp claws and bite attacks.

When I got married, it took a lot of time, literally years, for Peanut to get used to the presence of my husband. My husband is actually very good with animals; all kinds of animals--except Peanut-- loves him. At the first years of our marriage, we couldn't have any quarrels in the house, because Peanut used to attack him if he raised his voice even just a little. And she used to hiss at him in the hallway, and exercise her claws on his feet while he was sleeping, etc, etc. He has been so patient with Peanut and her temperament. Now they're ok with each other, and she even lets him pet her forehead every now and then.

Well, both my husband and I have kind of a soft spot for animals in need. We can't just "look the other way" when we see an abandoned puppy, or a sick kitten. Through the years we had looked after several animals (cats, dogs, birds) temporarily in our house. We usually took them, made sure they got medical attention, and found them good homes (or watch them fly away). Peanut always hated these four footed or winged guests, but we have learnt how to deal with her agressive behaviour. Usually she didn't cause much trouble as long as we treated her as the "queen of our universe", that meant, her food, toys, liiter box, favourite spots and my lap was "sacred" and strictly forbidded for any animal other than Peanut. Over the years and with very much patience, she has become somewhat calmer, but still she is not a fluffy fur ball to tickle and give belly rubs.

Now meet ShapSheik (as roughly prononced in our language) it means "silly"

We found ShapSheik abandoned in a metro station about 3 weeks ago. He had a semi-functional hind leg, several (not so deep) wounds on his hip, and another one on his ear. He was about 1,5-2 moths old, there was no mother in sight (we waited for about an hour and asked the officers there), and the station was like a death sentence spot for animals with busy streets just outside the entrance and nowhere near to find food. Naturally, we couldn't leave him there like that.

When we brought him home, he was weak, hungry and tired. Still, he showed a complete trust to us, and began the usual kitten tricks quickly. His wounds began to heal fast and even his hind leg improved almost to an unnoticable extend. Actually he never seemed to be bothered with his injuries or leg, he acts and runs and jumps and climbs as any normal kitten. Altough he likes to play with my husband more, he's a "moma's boy" right from the first day; she follows me around, sleeps with me (not right from the first day of course), and waits on my pillow for me to wake up in the mornings. Right now, he's sleeping on my lap.

So, as you have already guessed, ShapSheik is staying with us permanently. Actually, it seemed like the only option right from the beginning. Knowing Peanut's history, we're, of course, a bit stressed about how to introduce them to each other. Oddly enough, Peanut didn't looked like she cared much about Shapsheik's presence. At first, she choosed to ignore him. Then on the third day, he got loose from his isolation, ran straight towards Peanut, who was sunbathing at her favourite spot, got scared and hissed at her, then Peanut showed him her paw attacks (without using her claws). It was scary, but none got hurt, and our vet confirmed that they're both ok. After that incident we seperated them again, and we're trying to reintroduce him slowly. So far, they're fine with each other's scent, they hissed at each other a few times from the crack of a door, but things doesn't seem to get tense, and I'm hopefull about the situation.

Anyway, that is our story. I just wanted to say hi, and tell you a bit about our kids. So, please wish us luck, and again, hi everyone! :)
