So I got this beautiful 2 year old kitty from our local humane society 9 days ago. Her name is Pixie and she is super sweet and LOVES attention. But a few days ago, pixie started vomiting and won't eat more than a couple bites of her food/water. She also seems quite lethargic and dehydrated, which really worries me :( Do you guys have any suggestions for me? We can't afford to take her to the vet right now so I'm trying to help her at home as much as possible. Thanks! :)

Your cat really needs to be seen by a vet. Going days without enough food and water can very definitely be life-threatening. Have you contacted the humane society to see whether they can help? They may know whether she was ill recently and is experiencing a relapse. Please don't delay in getting her to a vet.

Please refer to the forum rules:

No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. If you suspect that your cat may be ill, please contact your vet immediately. You are welcome to look for advice in the health forum while waiting for that appointment, but never delay proper veterinary care waiting for Internet advice. Remember that cats, and especially kittens, are very adept in keeping pain to themselves and delaying treatment may cause irreversible damage.

Since you just got her from the humane society you need to call them now and explain she is very ill. They should have a vet on staff who can examine her and they should do this for free or at a reduced cost. Not eating and drinking is very dangerous and she needs to be seen by a vet right away. There is an excellent article titled “When You Can’t Afford a Veterinarian” on this website, available at http://www.thecatsite.com/Health/76/...erinarian.html. Please read through it to find out more about the options available to you, but I do think the humane society should help since you just adopted her.

A few months ago I also went through a saga with my cat who would not eat (http://www.thecatsite.com/t/259470/vomiting-bile-possible-blockage-in-ragodoll-what-to-ask-vet). What worked for me was a combo of cerenia and cyproheptadine-these two are wonder drugs in my opinion. If your cat has not eaten for a few days you need to get nutrition in her right away to stave off fatty liver. I know a lot of people are scared and for some reason a lot of vets also don't recommend but syringe feeding is a life saver. Carolina has a great thread on how to syringe feed and I promise it is not as bad as you think (http://www.thecatsite.com/t/227858/syringe-feeding-lucky-video-if-your-cat-is-not-eating).
