Mama Kitty is pregnant. A few nights ago she began bleeding, and retreated to her box, but there is no kittens, she looks a little smaller, but she still feels pregnant. what could be wrong?

Sometimes they may look a bit "smaller" a few days before birth,  just because the kittens have dropped , getting ready for birth,  so the cat looks less wide when seen from above.

Also a small amount of blood is normal within several days before the birth.    So it may just be not quite time yet.

Do you know when she got pregnant  so that you know how far along she is?

Do you  feel kittens moving?

If you mean she is bleeding steadily more than a little spotting,  you should call your vet.   Also if you notice a foul smell like something rotten,  she would definitely need  to go to a vet ASAP.

I just want to mention,  it is also possible she could have some of the kittens in some hidden place  possibly  stillborn;  if born dead it is also possible she ate them which they sometimes do  by instinct  to clean it up so predators are not attracted.

If  she had kittens in the house and alive I would think you would hear them.,  and normally she would be spending a lot of time with them.

Probably more likely is it just is not quite time but will be within a few days.

Sorry to hear that. It would be a good idea to have a vet check Mama Kitty out and have her spayed at the same time. It is much healthier for her.

Sorry to hear about her kittens.   that must have been sad to find.

Yes I would take Mama Kitty to the  vet  .    Since she had this abnormal thing happen  ,  I would want to get her checked out.  For example, she might have  had some infection in the womb that could be the reason she spontaneously aborted the litter,   and would need to get treated for that.   There is also a possibility  she could still have a dead kitten in  her,  or a retained placenta,  that could make her extremely ill,   could cause a dangerous infection even if she did not have one before.

And  it would really  be a good idea to get her spayed anyway.      If not,  she's likely to get pregnant again soon and might have the same thing happen,   since you don't know what caused it .    Or could have complications giving birth,  that could be a lot more risky and expensive than getting her spayed.

Or on the other hand  if she just keeps going in heat over and over without getting pregnant ,   that is not so healthy ,   it increases risk of cystic endometrial hyperplasia  and pyometra which can even be fatal.

Plus there's just already so many homeless kittens being killed at pounds for not getting adopted.   and other people trying to find homes for kittens by posting ads etc.   so I'm sure if you want a kitten or two you could find some without bringing a whole litter into the world.

If you are in the USA,  the ASPCA website has a database to search for low cost spay/ neuter clinics.   or there is another group with a hotline you can call that helps hook people up with discounted spay / neuter .    1-800-248-SPAY (1-800-248-7729).
