Hi everybody, I was just after some advice and or personal experience from others about weaning kittens, I have 2 kittens who are 6 weeks 5 days old, neither have weaned yet I'm wondering if this is normal for their age? As from what iv read on the Internet they usually start around 4/5 weeks they are still being fed from their mother whom I'm feeding kitten food mixed with a little kitten milk as iv read the mother shows them how to eat but she hasn't showed them as yet, I think the kittens may be getting hungrier and ready for weaning as they jump on me if I'm eating and try to get at what iv got and they watch they're mum but don't actually go over to the bowl of food, they have both started drinking a bit of water and kitten milk and I have left them bowls of kitten food and mixed it with cat milk but they don't show any interest but I'm also trying to litter train and when I place them in the litter box they will try and eat the litter, so iv stopped putting it in and put training pads instead,as I'm worried they will choke, I'm in no rush to get them weaned/trained as I will only re home them when they're good and ready rather than doing it at 8 weeks as I see most others do, but I'm worried that they're leaving it too late and they're going hungry or losing weight, they both seem healthy, playful kittens they're noses are wet, and they have the occasional loose bowel movement but usually it's normal and they are urinating normally I'm currently having issues with fleas at the moment despite my efforts and using top branded products on the mother cat and house sprays they still become ridden with them, I know I can't use any products on the kittens as they are too young, so iv just been bathing them with a tiny drop of baby shampoo and then using a flea comb but they're covered again 2 days later even though iv treated the house and the bedding, anyway sorry to go on but if any body can help I'd be very grateful :wavey:

It is not always the mom literally shows them. They rather look and see what she does, and try to do likewise...

Is their plate shallow enough?  Be prepared they will at first just walk through the food, not really realizing it is food.

Good they had begin to eat milk on their own.  Blend in it some more, etc...

Also, YOU can too show them a little more actively. They DO see you as their second mom, so you can teach you too.  Show them... Make rich possibilities for them to find something to nibble on - and voilá! discover it is possible to eat!

If you live in USA, they have baby food Gerber stage 1, chicken and turkey flavor.  Test it.

Minced meat is another classical beginners meal.

About the litter, is it quite common they do try and eat on it some, as they do test everything. That is why it is so important to use a non clumping litter

All in all, weaning is often a long process, including both they do learn to eat cat food, and nurse lesser and lesser.

Good luck!

Kittens wean at different ages.    Part of it is the mother becomes less willing to nurse.   part of it is the kittens start being attracted to the food.    If the mom is not bothered by them still nursing a lot she might not decrease the nursing,   so that can mean kittens have less motivation of hunger to try eating.   So one thing you can do  and I would do if the mother is getting too  worn down and skinny,  or if the kittens are approaching 8 weeks and are still not eating,    is separate kittens and the mother for an increasing amount of time each day  then try offering the food before they see mom again.

You can mix wet cat food with formula .    Try putting a little on their mouth.   Try putting it in a different sort of dish...  some kittens are very picky about what they start eating from.  Some will eat from a bowl,  some from a flat plate.   Or I've heard a suggestion  of trying a jar lid with low rim --  some kittens would eat from that instead of a real dish.

For the fleas you can use Advantage on young kittens but just use a smaller amount.  Many rescuers do use it.

Or  you can get food grade diamataceous earth ,  use it to treat your house for fleas and I do know some rescues use it directly on kittens,  just dipping their hand in the DE and petting the kitten's fur both in the direction it grows and against the direction it grows.
