I'm confused, one of my 2 1/2 week old kittens gained 31 grams yesterday and today she lost 8 grams, I always weigh at the same time. It's confusing because she is playful, alert, walking better than most of her litter mates and feeding fine. Her tummy is as round as all of her siblings and she is acting like the rest of them, she isn't crying or lethargic at all. I really wonder if I gave the wrong weight yesterday or my husband wrote it down wrong because other than the loss nothing else fits.

Besides that she is in the middle of the litter weight wise and always has been, the biggest is the only male and after gaining the 31 grams yesterday that put her only 2 grams behind him. When I was moving them back into their clean nest the boy that is the largest of the litter feels heavier then the others and the girl feels noticeably lighter like the other kittens.

If there were signs of a problem I'd have the little one to the vet asap but I'm really thinking this was error on my part. I'm going to weigh her again tonight and if she gained then I'll take the blame, if she hasn't then tomorrow she'll go see our vet.

From  +31 to -8 doesn't it seem likely that I messed up the numbers? I checked for discharge from her eyes and nose as well and everything is normal.

I guess it may be some mix up of numbers.

We had something similiar the other week. big plus one day, suddenly drop another day. But average was a normal, decent raise both days...  Which was my guess there, and probably the owners too.

Do as you are doing, observe closely but dont panic, wait for another day and weighting, to be the salomonic judge.   :)

I just went to feed the mamma kitty her wet food and checked in on the babies. The weight seems to have gone up 1 gram and she is still playing and acting like the others. I pulled the skin on her neck back and it went back fine so she isn't dehydrated and she doesn't have a hard stomach or bloat.

She was nursing along with the rest of her litter mates so I left them all be. I'll weigh her again in the morning to see if there was an over night loss, if she didn't gain anything I'll get her in to the vet but I am still not convinced that there is anything wrong with her. Tomorrow I'll know, I hate waiting!

It struck me it would help to see more clearly, more visibly, if the weights were not only annotated, but also written up graphically.  Like the midwifes and children nurses do with weights of children at the Children Care Center.   There you do see exactly which extra gain is probably some sort of jerk, and which drop is just lying on the correct line.

Here, 31g up, and 8 down, is 23 grammes gain on two days, = a normal daily raise of 11-12 grammes each, no?

Ie, I hope her normal daily gain IS somewhere thereabout?

For this particular kitten the last 14 days weights in order are

+16g

+16g

+12g

+15g

+11g

+9g

+16g

+22g

+4g

+25g

+12g

+12g

+31g

-8g

Some days one kitten or another will have a small gain but they always do this after a big gain the previous day, she is the only one that has lost any weight. All of them gained more than double their body weight before they hit week two. She weighed 123 grams the day she was born and has gained 262 grams and now weighs 385 grams as of tonight even after the - 8.

Maybe I'm worrying to much, I'm just wanting to catch an issue before it becomes bad.

I would guess either that 31 grams was an error  or she was weighed soon before she had some large amount of poop.

I think when Stefan said 'graphically"  he meant literally in a graph / chart .      and that hopefully this would be just a glitch along a line of steady growth.

I would just keep an eye on her as I'm sure you will.    Make sure she is nursing .   If she keeps losing like that you would need to see a vet
