My kitty suffers from constipation issues mainly because she's a senior kitty [13 years old]. She's been on a mainly dry food diet her whole life. My vet told me to switch her to half and half plus mix miralax in the wet food. I started feeding her this mix a month ago and still she will not go for it all of the time. I feel as though I'm wasting so much food right now. Every time I feed her I have to throw away the majority of the food from the previous feeding because it's all dried out and nasty. I have tried all kinds of things I feel like. But my bank account can't take it anymore...

Here is what I have tried:

First because we had to do an enema a little over a month ago, the vet told me to give her baby food to ease her stomach. She loved that stuff especially the turkey and peas kind. Just gobbled it up. Gradually I started reintroducing the dry and a little bit of the wet with the baby food. And then started decreasing the baby food until it was just half dry and half wet with the Miralax mixed in. At first I thought she was taking to it pretty well but I was mistaken. The dry food I give her is Blue Buffalo Freedom and so of course the first starting point was to give her the wet food version. She would eat it up for the first week. Then I wanted to try some other flavors so I bought every single flavor available in blue buffalo. She would eat some and then others not. And so I thought well I'll stick to the ones she is eating. After a few days, she became disinterested in the ones she was eating. And back and forth. This whole time, if I fed her the Freedom wet food she would gobble it up. So I went out and bought all of the Freedom canned food at my local Petco. Sure enough now she won't eat it. Even if it's mixed with the dry. I read that if I give her probiotics first of all it would be good for her digestion and second of all it would entice her to eat her food. Again it seemed to work at first but now she won't touch it. Lastly, I have tried giving her treats when she does eat the food. This only works every once a while. I have even just only fed her dry which of course she gobbles up in a heartbeat but then ends up constipated.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm tired of her not eating and whining at me to change her food. I come home from a long day at work to her whining about the food in her bowl not being good enough. The food smells good to even me!

Any ideas on how to make this kitty eat her food would be greatly appreciated. I don't want her to end up with Liver Disease because she's so finnicky. Help!

Usually when someone says "half dry and half wet", they mean half the daily diet of each, not mixed together. . . are you sure he meant mixed?

But anyway, I'd cut out the dry food altogether, especially considering her age (older cats need the moisture to keep their kidneys healthy). You need to do this carefully, because she needs to eat enough calories every day, but it can be done even with the most die-hard kibble addict. But if she knows you'll give in and let her have kibble, she's less likely to transition fully to all canned food.

Here's a good website with a lot of advice on the subject: http://www.catinfo.org/ If you need specific advice, just post and I'm sure someone will have some more tips :D.

Yes, she told me mixed together and yes half of each for the daily value. I have tried just doing them separately also but she'll only go for the dry food which is not what I want.

I have a whole bag practically of dry food left that I bought before the vet told me to cut her dry food intake down. And again I feel like I'm wasting food all over the place.

I just read an article at that site you sent me on switching from dry to canned. I think I'll try some more of the tips. See if we can get this kitty back to eating her food normally. I am concerned that she isn't getting the right amount of food in her every day since I started this switch. It seems that she hasn't had any problems. She's one to show me when she's not feeling well and I know that's not the case. I think I'll also call my vet tomorrow to see what she recommends. I need to get kitty eating canned ASAP!

Using the transition tips from catinfo.org is how I got my diehard kibble eaters transitioned from free fed kibble eaters to eating raw!  But first they transitioned to 3 meals per day of canned food, and the trick really is to find something they like, as I know you are finding out.  And something they LOVE one day they will seem to hate the next day, so you have to switch it up.  Texture is really a big thing to cats too.  You may find that she prefers pate.  If that's true, you can create pate out of just about any food by putting it in a blender, or better yet, a Magic Bullet, if you have one.  I used mine a lot, and added the probiotics and digestive enzymes and whatever else, (and water, always) into it and made the pate.

Also, many cats like their food a certain temperature.  And some like theirs soupy. Yours could use extra water anyway, so I would always add more water to whatever canned you can get her to eat.  Now, when you said you heard adding probiotics helped it taste better, I have to ask....What????  The only things I've ever heard in that arena is using FortiFlora as a topper, and technically I guess it's a probiotic, but not a very good one.  But normally is IS a very good topper, although I have 1 cat who loves it, 1 who hates it, and 1 who sometimes loves it and sometimes hates it

I think that article referenced above talks quite a bit about toppers.  They work wonders.  You can certainly use crushed kibble as a topper.  And you can always return some of that Freedom that she won't eat now.  If you are looking for grain free, did you know Fancy Feast CLASSICS are grain free?  Most cats love 'em.  And they are pretty inexpensive, especially at places like Target.  Granted they aren't as good as some other canned food, but the CLASSICS could be worse.  I used Soulistic (Petco's brand) to convert mine.  They ALL loved it (now they hate it)

If you have a Petsmart or Petco near you, go to one of them. For a taste test, pick up one 3 ounce can of Nutro Natural Choice wet canned cat food in the Sliced Turkey flavor and one 3 ounce can of Minced Chicken.

My 16 year old cat was a kibble addict all of his life. I have tried every good brand and texture of wet canned food cat food on him. His normal reaction, total rejection. If he did eat it, he'd eat for two weeks and then stop. But, he never was enthusiastic about eating wet canned cat food.

When I opened up the cans in the above two flavors, he was meowing loudly. He had never before shown any interest in the other brands when I opened up the cans. I know my cat doesn't like pate so I've never tried NCC in pate which is what they call their "Soft Loaf".

He really likes Sliced Turkey, Minced Chicken and Sliced Chicken & Tuna. Good ingredients too. Meat, grain free, has taurine, no veges, no carrageenan. One oddity about this food. It contains pork broth which most brands of wet canned food don't have and I have a feeling my cat likes the pork broth and this might be the main reason why he likes NCC.

I'm going to Petsmart today to buy 20 cans of NCC. But, amongst those 20 cans will be two 3 ounce cans of Minced Cod. I'm going to try the minced cod on him for a "taste test".

BTW, Petsmart normally sells 3 ounce cans of NCC for $1.19 a can, but they put it on sale lots of times for $1.00 a can and sometimes, not very often, but sometimes for $0.90 a can. I think it's on sale right now for $1.00 a can. Check out the link below.

BTW, he's been eating NCC for two months now.
