Well .. everything was fine the rest of yesterday and all day today, but I'm curious if others have had their cat just randomly barf ?

Yesterday, after Si's lunch (Fancy Feast Classic Chicken), always supplemented with a small handful of dry kibble (currently PurinaOne Smartblend Chicken & Rice -- until my new dry food order arrives).  He's been eating this same blend of food for months with no issues.

He played and napped all morning as usual.  Talked up a storm as usual.   Only after lunch did he jump up on our bed (I assumed for a nap) and I heard two small, screetchy sort of coughs.  Wasn't sure if it was the hubby or Si.  When I realized it was Si I ran back there to witness him barf what appeared to be a small amount of his wet food from lunch.  About the size of a dollar bill.  No worms in it.  No hair at all in it.   It truly looked like the gravy from the Fancy Feast with a few tiny morsels of food in it.

So I'm confused.  Can cats get too full and barf?   Could he have eaten too fast & got a little down his windpipe or something?  We don't so much as leave a candy wrapper lying around so I don't believe there is anything he could have got a hold of.

Today he has eaten his breakfast & lunch serving, played hard with his lazer mouse and da Bird with no issues whatsoever.  Poop is all solid and normal.

Any thoughts or ideas that I need to keep an eye out for?

Welcome to The Cat Site.  Yeah, cats throw up, shouldn't a regular occurrence, but nothing to be super alarmed about.

As long as Si continues to act normally (doesn't hide), pees and poops and plays normally, I wouldn't worry about it.

Now, if he starts throwing up every time he has a particular protein, like chicken, you may be looking at an allergy.  Or additive that is in Fancy Feast and the kibble.

Ritz throws up a lot (not normal, being addressed medically), and I can usually attribute it to her eating too much cat grass, too cold food (I fed raw) or too much too fast.  Also, sometimes due to my schedule Ritz goes 12 hours between meals.  If there is too much acid in her stomach, she'll throw up.  My go-to food in these cases is baby food (meat + water ONLY, no cornstarch, lemon).  Loves it, won't throw it up.

Thanks Ritz! I will definitely keep all that in mind. Nothing has been out of the ordinary with him since that random throwup. Just out of the blue. The only other time since he adopted us back in March was one solitary round worm. He had no vet history prior to our adopting him as a stray, so one round of StrongID and we've never seen another issue so this took me to total surprise.

My cat Moki doesn't vomit often but when she does she makes sure I know lol. She would always do it under the covers of my bed and right by my arm or leg, so I'd end up sleeping in it all night! There was one week a few years ago where she did it to me twice, I was so grossed out lol.

Ugh!  I guess I should be thankful it was on TOP of the comforter.

Luckily no more pukes since that one.

Well darn .. we had another barf today with what I'm sure is a roundworm .. so Mr. Si will be seeing a vet here in Gunnison tomorrow afternoon.

I would like a refresher course from those of you more experienced:

I know that had we found him as a small kitten (rather than approx 8mos old) he would have had ?? how many rounds of wormer?

His history:   Since Si was ill, with a cat bite starting to abcess, we took care of that first. Then he started puking badly, and puked up a very small clear worm that the vet ID'd as a roundworm.    The vet gave us a Drontal pill we had finally managed to get down him then he barfed that up too.   He barfed so much the vet even administered Cerenia to calm his stomach.  The next visit with our original vet he sent us home with the StrongID in a syringe which worked fine.  We have him on Revolution, and admittedly I'm only administering it every other month.  Could that be the issue or did he just never get rid of the worms from 5mos ago having only had one round of wormer?

I scoop his litter box (tidy cat breeze) almost instantly after he does his business.  And I completely change the pellets each month, tearing the entire box apart to clean/scald it all clean.  His pee pads get changed based on his habits, which works out to a new pad about every 4-5 days.

Just trying to figure out if he just now acquired another round of round worms somehow or if they ever went away to begin with ..

Drontal treats round worm and tape worm, though in some areas the round worm are resistant to it. In that case, Panacur will most likely be prescribed. I think Revolution may also be used to treat it: I'd have to look it up. That's the topical.

To effectively treat round worm, the life cycle of the round worm must be taken into account. Whatever treatment is used, the eggs are not killed. So it must be re-administered after three weeks, to allow the eggs and/or larvae to mature. Having gone through this so many times, with rescue kitties we always take the precaution of giving a third dose of whatever after another three weeks.

Thanks so much LDG!

I guess it's rather safe to assume, since he was not able to keep the March 2013 Drontal pill down the first time, that he's likely just continued to have them all along.  Even though he's never puked since March until 3wks ago & now today.

He is due for another dose of Revolution but I'll hold off until we see the vet tomorrow to see what route they want to go with treating it.

My poor boy :(

He's just so full of life and fun every day that it's just hard to believe he has those nasty little buggers inside.  So hard to understand how they don't have more symptoms, outside of finally throwing one up, for us to be able to know something might be going on.

Well, this local vet took a look at the worm we saved under a microscope & said it's probably a round worm, but since I had refrigerated it, it was quite dried out by the time we arrived at 2pm for our visit.  We did take a 24hr stool sample along & they sent that out for a "fecal o/p giardia elisa" test.

He also received the 1yr Feline Herpes/Calcivirus/Panleuk shot since he had no secondary shots from his initial vet back in March.

She treated the worms (until the fecal comes back) with StrongID and sent us home with 2 more doses for 10-days apart.  Once we know if there is anything else going on inside from the fecal testing she may administer some other form of wormer like Panacur.

On the bright side, she said he was a healthy boy, heart & lungs sounded good, and that he had a beautiful coat.  He weighed in a 11lbs 5oz

If he had giardia, you'd probably know it (stinky, loose stool or diarrhea). I'm surprised the vet didn't just run a fecal float in house to see if there was round worm in the stool. Maybe there wasn't enough there to do that and send it out. :lol3:

I guess it's been too long, because I don't remember how to use StrongID (I thought it was Strongid-T? ). It's just that in MY experience, another round needs to be administered AFTER the three weeks to make sure the eggs have all matured. :dk: Maybe others will chime in. :)

She said she could do a fecal float inhouse but preferred to send it out to see if there was anything else going on since this was the 3rd time he had thrown up "out of the blue" since March, along with the 2nd time he had thrown up a worm even though he had already had 2 rounds of the StrongID (that's what on the prescription).  We have 2 more rounds to give him now 10 days apart so that should be three rounds of wormer.
