So after hearing "When are we getting a friend for Holly" for 6 months, Friday we went to animal control and brought home a kitten.  Orange tabby- name is Samwise Gamgee ( my kids like LOTR).

Getting him "fixed" though may wind up being a hassle.  I went through animal control.  Wanted to do so for a couple of reasons.  I wanted to check out their new facility (very pretty).  I like taking in an animal from a regular shelter that might not have a chance at life.  Their adoption fees are reasonable ($75 total.  $35 for the cat, and $40 to the humane society to get his operation done).

And the humane society may be a problem.  I called them this morning to try to set up an appt, since that is what they told me Friday.  The person that answered the phone said that once they got our information, they would call us back and make something.  Well- I don't want to wait until Nov (and that's when the clerk at animal control originally put it down).  They said he's 6 weeks.  I don't think so.  He's got "boy parts" already.  He's not spraying stuff- but I don't want to wait to find that out.  We had one that sprayed and it was a PAIN.  And I also gave them $40 for a neuter/microchip combo.

He's got to go to our vet this afternoon.  If our vet gives the go-ahead, I'm going to call them tomorrow and say "he's x weeks old and x pounds so I want him done as soon as you can"  But it's kind of hard to do so when animal control didn't really know how old he was- or how much he weighs.

Holly is- kind of stressed.  They will tolerate each other in the same room.  Holly does a lot of growling at him, and she did try to swat at him this morning.  When nobody's home, Holly gets the run of the house and Sam is locked in someone's room with a litter box.  Holly lived with other cats all of her life so I don't think there's going to be a problem.  And Sam's just a love-bug with a good personality- I think he'll be fine too.

If I can figure out how to post pictures from my phone to this site- I'll post a couple.

How cool! Love his name! Hope you can get him neutered ASAP. Can't wait to see him!

Congrats on your new baby
. I adore orange tabbies.

I think you are right to get him fixed sooner than later. Are there any other low-cost clinics you could try?

Congratulations on the new baby! I had my vet neuter/spay my crew since I didn't want to wait either. Had the vet fill out the paperwork saying he neutered/spayed and dropped it off at the shelter. Easy peasy.

There is a mobile clinic that I can try if the Humane Society gives me a problem.  I really don't think they will- I think if I had a firm age and weight I wouldn't have gotten brushed off as quickly.

Peaches- I know my vet would do it.  But it's WAY more there.  They wanted $250 a few years ago for Holly- I got her done for $50 at the clinic.  I know girls cost more than boys do.  And I think I go to one of the "pricier" vets in the area.  I'd look around and change- it's just that we've been at this one forever- and both vets have kids at the high school my youngest is at (oldest graduated last year).  One of the vets is a band parent too, and I've got a soft spot for anyone who supports music in our schools
Which is why I don't really mind giving his clinic our money.

I should have mentioned it in my other post: my vet discounted the cost to help me out. Worth asking about?

Maybe.

But the vet didn't want him to eat Kitten Chow, and that's what I've got him on at the moment.  So tomorrow it's over to Petsmart to get a bag of something else.  She said Hills or Iams.  Now Holly's on Nutro- and if I can find a kitten food in that I'll do that.  The commissary has Nutro, and it's at a much better price than Petsmart has.

Anyways I'm thinking if I go over to the clinic tomorrow bearing a bag of food- that they might schedule me in
That and I'll volunteer to wash some towels if they'll do the surgery for Sam.
