Hello, fellow cat lovers.
I have a number of strays I feed. Last night, I saw a coyote in my yard. We think he was eating the cat food we set out for them and not stalking my cats, but I'm obviously protective of my fur babies. I chased him off, and put the cats in my garage for the night, turning on a fan to circulate air and keep them cool. But I'm vacationing soon and won't be able to keep them in the unairconditioned garage for several days while I'm gone.
Thoughts about protecting my pets? How can I drive the coyotes off?

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
It's expensive and washes away with rain, so better if you hang some in bags around the property, but predator urine, in this case, wolf urine. Of course it may freak the cats as well. If you're married or have a boyfriend, having a human male pee around the area would actually be the best. (Probably best done after dark LOL). Of course, it'd have to be kept fresh...

Interesting idea!  If it works it can surely be used more often.

Does it works against foxes too?  Coyotes arent very common in Sweden, but foxes do happens, even in the cities.

It doesnt need to by "my" actual boyfriend or husband, does it??  Some merciful neighbour should do OK?

(this is asked on the behalf of our female forumists).

If there is some diluted beer, or even say, bourbon in it, does it still works?

Idea:  next time the police is arresting me for peeing in public places, I may try get free by explaining to the judge I was just protecting the town from coyotes and other predators?   Protecting both cats, small dogs, children and old frail ladies!

Swell!   I feel already relieved.     :)

Other than a fence to keep the coyotes out, I don't know of a solution. But would it be possible to put a small a/c on a timer in your garage for the period of time that you are gone on vacation. Unfortunately, speaking from experience, coyotes will kill cats without hesitation when they have the opportunity.

We deal with coyotes where we live too. Our cats live outside in a fenced in area during the day when we are home. At night, they sleep in the garage in a pet cage. We put an A/C wall unit there for them. It heats and cools and is easily installed. Coyotes are very aggressive and will kill any small animals, cats, dogs, etc. In fact they have been known to attack small children. I hope you find a solution.

I second the idea of having a small air conditioner in the garage.  Is someone coming to feed the cats while you're away?  That person should also check the garage and determine if the AC is needed.  Otherwise, running the fan should suffice.

As a permanent solution, though, you probably need to look into fencing.  I believe even a four-foot fence will keep coyotes out.

I'm sorry but I also had to say Stephan's comments made me laugh out loud!  Please don't try it, though, Stephan.  I doubt the police would believe it.

Remember coyotes dig. So if a fence is considered, there would need to be some kind of reinforcement at the bottom to keep them from digging under the fence.
