These pictures show the new floor as well as everything else that's been done. We finished the under-cabinet lighting about six weeks or so ago. Still have to do the backsplash and get the new fridge.

The under-cabinet lighting has LED lights that are much brighter and much cooler. I use these lights early in the morning when feeding the cats their breakfast and at night, when I don't need a lot of other light. The electrician also installed a dimmer switch. The light switch is for the above-cabinet lighting.

This is my main work area where I do most of my prep work for dinner and for baking. The mixer is Big Red, my Kitchen Aid.

The microwave area....we need a new microwave, too. From all the moving, plugging in and unplugging, the read-out is shot. It still works, though, so replacing it is on our to-do list, but isn't an emergency. See the sun tunnel? Oh, and new ceiling light; it matches the light at the sink window now.

The stove area.....to see the floor. We really like the floor.

Another view of the floor....

Granite countertop --Patagonia -- and I have never regretted my choice....you can see the under-cabinet LED lights reflected in the granite.

The sink area....and my window! Love my window! (I know, you've heard this all before) The China cabinet is there at the dishwasher.

The sink and the faucet. It's a Blanco sink in black, which goes well with the countertops. The faucet is a Moen with a dishsoap dispenser. I will never go back to two sinks. Never. I can fit a turkey roaster in this sink. I can fit cookie sheets in this sink.

My spice cabinets. These are "vintage" Three Mountaineer cabinets. My mother helped me get the first one with S & H green stamps back during the very early 70s....it was 24-3/4 books. The lighter one is the newer one that I got from Ebay a few years ago.

Made my own labels for this set.

These are supposed to be hand-painted bottles. I don't know that they really are, although they do look like they are. Doesn't matter....I like them anyway. I also have spices stored in one of the cabinets in the kitchen area....we use a lot of spices and herbs.

These was taken on a rather dark, dreary day....but I can still see very well. Love those sun tunnels.

The table area with the spice cabinets, the hutch, the cats' litter box and, of course, our Mollipop.

We did not install a new dishwasher or a new stove; those appliances aren't that old. Our fridge is almost 20 years old, though. The new fridge will likely be a Samsung French door type. Still looking at backsplash.

Thanks for looking!

it's absolutely beautiful, Pam, and so bright now! I bet all your guests gravitate to the kitchen because it's so "homey".

Gosh, Pam.  Everything is beautiful.  If you don't mind, what material is the sink made from?  We are granite shopping and salespeople keep telling us stainless steel is the only kind of sink we can get?

Everything looks beautiful Pam, you and Rick did a good job.  I know you've wanted a new kitchen for years, now you have most of it done.

That is a beautiful kitchen, you guys did a really good job.  It's nice to see someone who actually does a lot of cooking to have a really nice kitchen.

Stunning!

I especially love the spice cabinet.

I'd like to start the 'how many cats can you spot in Pam's' kitchen competition

I'm going for 8 not real and 1 real

I think some little things in the background look suspiciously cat-like but I can't count them in

Thanks guys! It's my favorite kitchen! It's not a showpiece, but that's not what I wanted. I wanted functional and comfy.

A friend redid her kitchen a couple years ago. To this day, you can't walk in and just sit down. She has to get placemats for the table so there's no mess. You can't help her chop veggies because she has a Corian countertop and it scratches if you look at it cross-eyed and she only has one cutting board. She has no place to roll out dough and cut it. She's constantly saying, "Now, be careful you don't scratch the sink." She has a ceramic tile floor and she's constantly complaining that her legs hurt. I didn't want that! I wanted people to come in and feel at home, to come in and talk to me while I'm working, to be able to roll out cookies or bread dough. (I told the kitchen designer that I wanted to be able to cut on my countertops....not all the time, but I wanted to be able to do that. It was important to me.) I wanted homey. And I got it. I'm just so darn happy.

And everybody does come to the kitchen. People come in, grab a cup of coffee, and plop down. There's a pink blankie on the kitchen table; that's Mollipop's blankie and it's been on the table since she came to live with us. Tabby uses it, too. My BIL will come in, grab coffee, flop in a chair and talk to whoever's on the blankie...while he's munching on a hunk of blueberry buckle.

Nurseangel, that is definitely not true about stainless sinks, at least not around here. You can get pretty much any kind of sink you want, BUT the weight of the sink will determine if it can be top-mounted or under-mounted. I originally wanted a black cast iron sink. It could have been under-mounted, but the sheer weight of the thing would mean that it if ever had to come back out, the entire countertop would have to come off first. Plus the support for the sink would have been unreal. Rick didn't want to go there and I don't blame him. It could have been done, but not a biggie. Our granite fabricator uses Blanco and I have heard a lot of good things about Blanco, too. This is a siligranite composite sink, so it's a little heavy, but not overly so.

The thing with this sink is that some reviewers mentioned their sinks cracking during installation. Our granite fabricators ordered the sink for us, had it shipped to their store, and brought it with them, and installed it when they installed the countertops. All done at one time. That way, if anything happened, it was their dime, not ours. And then my nephew-in-law (who is a professional plumber) came in and did the plumbing for the sink. We had to have the faucet in the house at the time of installation, so the granite guys could install that (but not the plumbing) at the same time as the sink and countertops. That way, they knew how many holes to drill and exactly where we wanted them drilled. It worked out well. And I just love this sink. (It does NOT come with a sink drain; you have to buy that extra.....I went to Ebay. They're a little expensive, especially for the black drainer.) I have poured boiling water down the sink with no trouble *knock on wood*. The other night when I was done with the water bath for the pickles, I poured all the boiling water down the drain. It was fine. I highly recommend this sink. Blanco has other colors and other kinds of sinks, too, including the regular two-sink set-up. (I went with the one large sink because I was so tired of trying to handle cookie sheets in the little sink and move things around. I hated that.)

I have wanted a new kitchen for years and years. It's been a dream for me. I needed light. Lots of light. There are times, especially when Rick is out of town and I'm not sleeping well, I'll be baking at midnight. Or 2:00 in the morning. There are times when I "need" to bake something. I know how silly that sounds, but it's true. I simply love to cook. I'm not a great cook by any stretch, but, by golly, I'm a happy cook.

The mixers!
I used to have 3 Kitchen Aids! Years and years ago (about 30 years ago?) I bought my first KA mixer. I had it on lay-away and it took me a while to pay it off. I was so excited. It was Cobalt Blue and I loved that thing. Well, then my mother decided she needed a KA and she liked blue. So we bought her her Cobalt KA for Christmas one year....and she used that mixer. She used to make cakes and cookies to sell at a local flea market. Every week. That mixer was put through its paces, that's for sure. Rick gave me Big Red a few years ago for Christmas because Baby Blue (my Cobalt Blue mixer) really couldn't handle some of the bread doughs I was using and it couldn't handle me tripling batches of snickerdoodles. And then my mom decided that she couldn't handle the weight of her KA mixer; it was getting to be too much to move it around all the time. So she gave it back. Three mixers. Turns out that my niece desperately wanted a KA mixer and I asked her if she would mind taking Mom's old mixer; I figured it still had a lot of good years left. She was so grateful....and it's still going strong.

I kept Baby Blue, largely because over the Christmas holidays, I have both of them running at the same time. It's like a cookie store in the kitchen! And sometimes when I'm just making one batch of snickerdoodles, I'll use Baby Blue for that. (I also have two portable mixers, my mother's and one that Rick gave me years ago. Yes, I'm one of those people who doesn't mind receiving kitchen stuff for Christmas...I'm in heaven when I open a Christmas present and it's a nice knife! One year, Rick gave me a gorgeous set of Shun knives and I drooled until I finally got to use them.)

The spice cabinets. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay:  http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...Three+Mountaineer+cabinets&_sacat=0&_from=R40  I just love the spice cabinets. Mine came with the little glass jars, but you can find them without the glass jars and then buy your own, if you want to. And then make your own labels. I buy glass jars here: http://www.specialtybottle.com/glassjars-2.aspx   The cabinet style that I have holds 30 spice bottles.

Mani, there are five cat-related items on the hutch, so I'm thinking there are probably more than eight non-real cats in the kitchen.

Thank you for your comments! It means a lot to know that the decisions we made were good ones. I'm thrilled with everything and am looking forward to getting it all finished!

I love your kitchen so much I have to tell you that I've been back to this thread more than a dozen times to admire it!

You said you wanted a homey kitchen? Well you got one! I picture myself in it feeling totally at home, with the smell of baked cookies or pies in the air.

Thought I'd mention the hutch. This originally belonged to my great-grandmother, so there's history there. She gave it to my mom (who was her adopted daughter) and then when Mom and Dad downsized, it came to me. And from the time it was put in our kitchen, it has looked like it belonged there. My great-grandfather made it for my great-grandmother when they got married. At that time, it was just the bottom. Several years later, he made the top. So it's in two pieces and they go together. I think it's an old Shaker-style.

At any rate, it looks right at home in the kitchen. I keep it polished and I use lemon oil on it a few times a year to try to keep it in good condition. I'd love to have it done over, but am leery of doing so as supposedly, it would lose its "antique" value. Not that it matters as I will never sell it.

And that red can on top of the hutch? That was my great-grandmother's, too. She used it to store flour....her flour scoop is still inside. I keep it on top of the hutch, but I don't store anything in it.

And also on top of the hutch is a green "fish bottle". I think it held some kind of alcohol or something. It was in Grandma's house and she gave it to me many, many years ago. I don't know that it's really worth anything. But I like it.
