Hi everyone

I'm hoping you can give some advice. I'm a 1st time cat owner and have been reading a lot about keeping cats but a lot of the advice is contradictory. So hoping you can help.

I got 2 kittens who are 7 weeks old now and the owner I got them from said she was feeding them Whiskas wet kitten food with Whiskas dry kitten food mixed in. She said she also gave them Whiskas kitten milk along with them getting feeds from their mum. So we had been doing this when we got home but they weren't interested in the food or the milk. Thought must be due to their first day in a new environment. Then 2nd day managed to get them to take the kitten milk and they have been taking that since. They have not been eating the Whiskas food at all. When I was at their first vet check she suggested either some chicken or tuna so they have been eating the tuna not an awful lot but at least they have ate some. Have mixed in the dry food with it but they just picked out the tuna and left the rest. The thing that worries me is that both their stools are quite runny ( apart from 1 kitten doing a proper poo on the 2nd day). I'm worried it might be the food or the milk. They won't touch water but drink the milk. I started their de-wormer today although they hated it! I have to give them it again for next 2 days.

They are really lively and bright so don't look ill or anything.

I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me. Thanks!

Does the vet think that the worms are causing the diarrhea?  Have they been tested for other parasites?  I would start offering them some good quality canned kitten food mixed with their milk.  I'd offer a small amount of dry food, but they're probably too young for that unless it's wet down.  For the canned food, you could try Royal Canin kitten, Wellness (which makes poops stink to high heaven, but is very good quality) or even Fancy Feast kitten.  Put it on a paper plate and let them have at it.  You'll have to bathe them or wipe them down after as they'll get it all over themselves.

Haven't spoken to the vet about the stools as when I went the day after getting the kittens they hadn't done one yet. Will call them tomorrow and speak to them then.

The kittens are still lively and I've gave them the full 3 day course of de wormer. I chose not to get antibiotics and to try just the food itself first. They don't like it and won't eat it. As the vet was closed Sunday I decided to try them on some cooked chicken which they ate and salmon which they ate as well. I stopped the kitten milk in case it was that which is causing the soft stools. Today Riley was sick. As he hasn't taken any food yet it was just a lot of saliva that came up. I've read this can be a side effect of the de wormer but the last dose was on Monday. Is this normal? Should they still have soft poo (on occasion has been diahrrea like consistency). I've put the vet food out again today after him being sick but they will not touch it. I'm just confused. I'm not sure what to so about this food situation and how to get them settled onto a proper diet.
