Wasn't sure where to put this but since the story revolved around cat health, here it is.
Novenber 11, 2007 my husband is at the neighbors, who has a mechanic that had a huge colony of cats just making kittens. One Siamese kitten in particular took a liking to my husband, at the time a conformed cat hater, and endlessly climbed his leg. No matter how many time he was removed and put on the ground the kitten was determined. Finally Steve LOOKS at the cat, what a mess. He grabs him and brings him home, with one hand he hold this messed up furball to me with one request... "Fix it". I looked at this baby and just KNEW he'd never ,make the night. I told the hubby if this cat made the night, his name will be Miracle. We cleaned him up as best we could, got some food and water in him and the next day headed for the vet. This is what he looked him when he entered out lives...
His eyes were so swollen the lids had turned inside out, he could barely breathe, he was wormy, etc....
The vet cleaned the eyes and expected him to be blind if he made it, gave him sub-q fluids, antibiotics and we headed home armed to fight for this little guy. He was content and his favorite spot was my husbands shoulder. We pampered him and in a few weeks, without warning he chased a toy! We were so happy to know he could see we could have cried.
Months pass and he keeps improving and he appeared to be a happy cat, finding his place in a new world and settling in to a life. This was probably 8 to 9 months later.
All goes well for nearly four years and he starts dropping weight. We didn't think much about it since he was always skinny, but we knew something wasn't right, he was sluggish and eating less. Vet trip revealed that his kidneys never formed fully before he was born and he gave him a few hours to a few days and we had given him 4 years he'd never have had, and that from birth he never really had a chance. We lost him the next day, devastating my husband like nothing I've ever seen. I still have a bad time thinking about this cat, but his life had a purpose. He was sent to change my husbands heart. To make him see that cats are beautiful, loving companions and from that he has since adopted Mercury and Bo. I wouldn't trade those four years for anything in the world, even though it was far too short a time He was a gift that will save many cats for many years.
So if anyone ever asks themselves "Is it worth it to fight for a losing cause?", the answer is an emphatic YES. This cat had the will to live and we would't give up until he did. Below is a picture of Miracle the day he lost him. he will never be forgotten and we always be grateful for the gift he gave us.
