Thanks starlie... when we move I'll definitely buy one! Which do you prefer... the one with stairs or without?

I would personally use the standard one, just because the actual part where the litter goes is wider. I don't think your 13 pound cat will have problems fitting in there. But if you're concerned with how much room he needs, I would get the one with stairs. I must warn you, it's a pretty big dome so if you need exact measurements, let me know and I'll do it when I get home.

I have or should I say Princess and Patsy have used the littermaid now for about 7 years without any problems. I've only had to replace 1 after about 3 years because it was defective. Now they have the littermaid Mega that's for multiple cat households or larger cats which I've upgrade to about 1 year ago. It's a little deeper, longer, and has slightly higher sides than the regular one. It's also more expensive but was well worth it for me. I know alot of people don't like it but I will not go back to a regular one now.

My biggest problem with it was when I first got it Princess was fascinated with the rake and would go in and out of it all day just to watch the rake move. After about a week she got over it.

I have the Littermaid, and I have to say Pickles loves it. So do I. The rake does the work, and I usually just clean the entire box out every 2 weeks just to keep it clean. Also I had great luck with the Littermaid Customer Service, had to call because I thought it was broken, because it stopped raking after I had cleaned it. They took my information and said to send 10.00 and a piece of the cord to an address they gave me and that they would send me out a new one. Told them no problem but I needed to wait for the new box to come, because didn't have another litter box. They sent the litter box out right away. Then don't you know I go to try the old box and it works. I called them and told them what happened, they told me just to keep the new one in case the other one malfuctions again. My friend also has had great dealings with there customer service. So I would have to say love my Littermaid.

all of the above is my experience, too - Cable would be in another room, but run in to watch if she heard the rake going! she's gotten over that now, but still feels the need to 're-christen' the litter after i add new.

We have a litter maid .. which is still packed since our move... but once we get our washer set up it is going into the bathroom .. and then in the kitchen we have a large tub thats bigger then a standard litter box with higher sides. It keeps the litter in the litter box and allows "the clowns"( our 2 youngest ) to use the litter box at the same time .. which they do do quite often.

It's sort of like ohhh you are using the litter box .. hmmm i need to pee too.. move over i want to use teh litter box too!!

Ever since I first saw the litter boxes that clean up right after the kitty has gone, I've been afraid of a malfunction and lose my kitties! No electric gizmos for my boys!
LOL, my kitties both did that too.... I thought, "ummm, leave the litter in the box!".
Never thought about that with the electric thing. I am definitely not going to get something like that now.
Jessie liked the hooded one but Punkin didn't. I had to take the top off for her.

We love our Littermaids!! We have three of them. My disabled kitty has to squat really low to the litter to get stable, so he won't use a box that's at all dirty. The rake works pretty well, though we do have to give them a supplemental scooping and clean off the rake every couple of days, and we give them a thorough cleaning every few weeks.

Definitely hooded/covered. Esmeralda will tip over the uncovered kind, for some reason, so it's really the only option for us.

I have one high sided and one small low side one for the kitten's kennel. They are deffinatley litter throwers...Noodles likes to try to get in the box while you are cleaning and Mooch will jump in and play in it when it is clean (lucky me she just loves water so she's usually wet when she decides to play in the litter box!) My mother has the littermaid box. Bunny is very finicky about the box being clean so it's helped so she doesn't go looking for a corner to use. She's had it over a year and had no problems with it. Occasionally the rakes get cloged and the door will get stuck open but other than that, it's great. Since it us motion operated (it waits a certain amount of time after it lasts senses motion before raking) the cats have never been in danger by it. They were fascinated with watching it and one time I was alone and heard it go off and thought someone was breaking in!

When I brought Ellie home (about 5 months ago) I bought 2 hooded. Two weeks ago I bought the Littermaid Mega it is great! Now I am using both. In the near future I will replace the hooded box for another Littermaid.

Jeremy made ours.
It's acrylic and about the size of a 50 gallon tall aquarium, with a 'door' hole cut into one side.

Then we also have a standard one upstairs.

The super large one is scooped 2 sometimes 3 times a day and completely changed and cleaned once a week.
The standard one is scooped every morning, and completely changed every evening, and cleaned once a week.

After living with an arthritic cat for a number of years (RIP Mr. Fuzzypants), I use dog litter boxes, but fill them with cat litter. They are low, and wide, so my girls have lots of room to move around in them. I don't fill them extremely full, so there's not too much litter spraying. I have 3 of them for my 2 girls. One big one downstairs. One big one upstairs and a small one that fits next to the toilet in the bathroom, since oen of them likes to "go" the same time I am. LOL.

I voted circular or something like that, clicked the wrong one. I have a covered one. It has no door thing just an opening. So hard to explain got it at canadian tire will try to link it:

My cat likes it, and it works really well. I do have a little scooping thing as well for very small pieces of poop
but overall I love it. Got it from my mother when we adopted our cat.
