I'm going to try this food, I think.

I'd like to know if anybody has any experience with it. I am particularly interested in what style food it is (pate? shredded? sliced?) I put a lot of supplements/meds in Poppy's food, so I prefer a pate which will make it easier to mix in supplements.

I used this for a long time but Casper suddenly wouldn't eat it anymore recently.  It's good quality and a complete food, I see no reason why you would need to supplement with this brand.

Oh and it's sort of a pate, but not quite, has some texture to it.  But not chunky or shredded for sure.

Thanks for the info.

Poppy has some health issues, thus the need to supplement. It's stuff like krill oil and glucosamine for arthritis, digestive enzymes and probiotics for constipation.

Ah! Ok, that makes more sense.  I actually thought maybe you meant those kinds of things after I wrote it.  You could easily mix them in.  I give Casper krill oil/glucosamine in his food now and then too and never had a problem adding these at all.

I wish he would eat it again.  It's so reasonably priced for the quality.  Maybe I'll give it another go.  He loved it for so long not sure why he suddenly developed an aversion to it, and I mean all the flavors, not just one.  Weird.

for Poppy!

To Casper, too!

Have you found the krill and glucosamine effective? We just discovered Poppy had arthritis a couple months ago. It is due to a trauma accident (don't know the details, she came to us as kitten that way), and we are told she must have pain even though she doesn't display symptoms. The vet thinks we should use prednisolone as an anti-inflammatory, but I would like to get away with krill, glucosamine and perhaps hyaluronic acid instead. But I don't know if this would be enough. 3 vets say that the pain must be sizable because x-rays showed a shift in one of her vertebrae and a bone spur.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about all those flavors before you even mentioned anything. The amount of acceptable (non-fish) flavors is one of the better points for Hound and Gatos. Are you alternating brands? Maybe you just have to rotate different brands in. I'm planning on using By Nature Organics and Halo in the rotation.

I have to be honest at saying we are lax at giving him both supplements.  My brain does not function well at 6am, which is when they get breakfast lol.  I have a long commute and they are lucky they get fed :p

We were told Casper "probably" but not definitively, has some arthritis in his back legs.  He has lost some muscle tone (he's 12 now), and we had noticed him having trouble jumping up into our bed for instance.  However, in recent months, in fact, since Cocoa came on board, his energy level has gone up a notch and he somehow manages to run and jump around and away from her during playtime quite well and without any troubles.  So, I'm not so sure if the vet was correct or not.  His troubles could have been related to something else entirely.  But, we do supplement him now and then, when we remember just in case, since it can't hurt.

As for the H&G, we do rotate with other brands, several in fact - all grain free. It started with him not wanting the chicken, which is his favorite flavor.  I then tried the lamb, beef and venison and he wasn't barely touching any of them.  So, I discarded it from the rotation.

It could be a texture thing for him.  He tends to be pickier than Cocoa about that, does not really care for pate style but I am not about to get him anything else.  He'd be a good candidate for raw feeding, he loves big pieces of food that he can chew apart (I do give them raw as treats sometimes so I know this) but, I'm in no position time or energy wise to commit myself to that; yet.

BTW I currently use Instinct, Before the Grain, Natural Balance, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, and Fancy Feast Classics on occasion.  I do use kibble as well, a combo of Orijen and I think right now the other is Before the Grain.  Could be something else - I switch kibble up too.

Well for crying out loud.  You can get Hounds and Gatos in Long Beach too?  (I'm the one who was also looking for Wellness Core in the Venison, Beef and Lamb flavor and can't find it in the state of Arizona, but Long Beach has it!)  I've been searching for Hounds and Gatos also, and it can't be found in this state.  Guess I'm going to have to make a trip to California

Well, not exactly in Long Beach, it's in Santa Monica. And I had to call the company to find a retail outlet. They used to have a retail store locator on their website, and I called 3 stores to see if they had it, no luck. I finally called Hound and Gatos corporate offices. The owner himself answered and told me to go to gotpetfood.com, said he just procured a sales contract with them that morning. So on the weekend I am driving to Santa Monica to get some Hound and Gatos and maybe some of the other food hard-to-find food they have. Poppy is having some health issues (mild IBD), so I'm willing to do this. Really, if you want me to pick up some single cans and send them to you along with the Wellness Core Beef, Venison, and Lamb, my offer still stands. I used to be an eBay seller, so I know how to mail. In your case, depending on weight, I'd go FedEx Ground or USPS flat rate.
