My 3 month old kitten (approximately 4 pounds for size reference) has been acting very strangely all day. He is usually a little ball of non-stop kitten energy and today he has slept nearly the entire day. He also usually eats at least 1 5oz can of cat food and today he has licked some gravy off his favorite beef in gravy food and ate a couple of tiny tiny pieces of chicken from a 3oz can... and that's it.

My fiance had gotten him some toy mice (specifically these) the other day while I was out of town to find out if I'm having a little nephew or niece (sister's ultrasound. It's a niece for me!). There are supposed to be 10 and we've search everywhere we can think of in the house and only been able to find 8. My fiance told me that he had found a piece of one of the mice yesterday before I got home so he thinks kitten ate at least the rest of that one.

How worried should I be? Does he need to go to the emergency vet tonight? I've never had a kitten/cat before so I'm honestly not sure how long they can go at that age without eating and how serious eating something like that is for them.

You know; I'm not really sure.  But I know our emergency vet will talk to you over the phone to help determine if its a big enough emergency to come in.  I would call to see what they say.

Please update us later!

If he's still using the box, I'd wait.  If he's not, he needs to go to the vet to rule out a blockage.

So update on Dexter:

I cleaned his litter box tonight (I clean it daily so I know how much he is peeing and pooping) and there was no poop... at all. I saw him go into the litter box a couple of times and try to do something but nothing happened. He was in his "pooping position" but I was watching and he didn't pee or poop. And it was almost 24 hours since he last ate. I decided to take him to the emergency vet to be on safe side.

$500 later I know that they didn't see any toys or other foreign bodies on the x-rays BUT they found out he has multiple rib fractures.
The vet thinks they are several weeks old so whatever happened to the little guy it was before I adopted him. And his blood work showed an active infection. And he was severely anemic with a distended abdomen so the vet thinks he has worms, which she treated. Poor Dexter! So he has some antibiotics and pain meds now in addition to the deworming he got so hopefully he feels better.

I don't understand how all that was wrong with him since he was just in to see his non-emergency vet on Saturday and they gave him a clean bill of health.

Sorry to hear that! Poor fellow.

As for toy mice, they should only have them while being supervised.  I have one cat who will chew them into pieces.  And it is not unusual for your cat to hide the mice.  When one of my cats was a kitten he would hide the mice all over the house. I've pulled them out of my shoes, out from under the oven, found them under my dresser etc.

Most cats don't eat the mice, but some will.  A lot of cat toys need to be used with caution.

One other warning: Keep rubber bands locked up or get rid of them! Rubber bands taste really good to cats.  My cat ate an entire rubber band and I found it in his stool. I thought it was a worm, but it wasn't.  I showed him other rubber bands, and he tried to eat them as well.

I'd say it's a blessing in disguise that you took him in!  So glad that there was no foreign body and that they found all those other problems with him and that he's on the road to recovery.  Hope he's feeling better soon!
