I took on a cat 7 weeks ago today. I suspected she was pregnant when I found her. I took her to the vet a few days after to confirm and my vet palpated at least 3-4 kittens the size of walnuts. Like I said its been exactly 7 wks since then. I took her in on wed last week to get checked out because ive been checking her temp twice daily and she was between 98-99.5 everyday last week, and has some brown discharge. She's big as a house. She has her own room food water giant nesting space and everything. Vet did a quick ultrasound and found very active healthy appearing kittens amd said wait it outs. Fwd to yesterday. Temp was 98.9 when I checked her. She was having pale yellow discharge So i figured It was baby day. Came home a few hours later she's in her box, on her side, obviously uncomfortable, breathjng alittle faster than normal but not panting and appeared to be laboring. Left her alone. Couple of hours later she's fine being her obnoxious normal self. Since in was awake again I checked her temp just now, 101. And her behavior is normal and kittens are still moving. No discharge or contractions of any kind. Kittens aren't usually palpable until around 18-20 days or so right? I worked at the vet I take my pets to for almost 5 yrs so I know some stuff. I've had her 49 days. Doing the math she is likely between 67-69 days. I don't know her history so I don't know if this is normal for her. I wanted to spay her when I found her, to be clear. My spouse was against it once she was confirmed pregnant. She will be spayed as soon as kitties are weaned.
Anywho
Anyone have any advice for me? I don't exactly know how far she is but I've given all then facts I have. Just concerned. Never had a pg cat before.

Yes you are correct,  kittens normally would not be palpable and the size of walnuts until 18 days.

It sure sounds like she had started going into labor and then stopped.   Sometimes if disturbed a cat can stop labor. but  it doesn't sound like there is any obvious reason for that (like being in a very noisy busy place where she doesn't feel secure ,  kids  constantly bothering her,  other pets worrying her etc. ) .

They can go up to 70 days and it's still within normal,  though  it's less usual than about 63-65 days.

The trouble is, the bigger they get ,  the harder it will be for her to have a vaginal delivery.   I would talk to the vet again because you might want to have her induced if she doesn't have them in another day or two   and if that doesn't work you could schedule a c-section.    At this point  you could be sure they're not  premature.   ( that's a risk of doing a c-section when you don't know when the cat mated.  But in this case you DO have more data since you know when the vet palpated them .   I think they have to be getting close to 10 weeks and I wouldn't really want it to go much beyond that!  A few breeds can go 71 days.  and one can go 73 days.  ( these are cats from Asia & Africa)  With a DSH  there is no knowing!   but over 70 would be very unusual.

She could be part Siamese, given her overall body shape, which is why I wasn't initially concerned because they do sometimes go long. She's solid white with big blue eyes. Totally deaf as well, which is why she's so calm j think. Im going to call the vet today because the kittens are pretty big. I can clearly feel entire bodies from skull to rear. Will update later

Looks like a probable c section. She has for sure 5, with a suspected 6th. Vet measured her pelvis versus the largest kittens head they are the exact same size :/ she said if she goes naturally she would prob be fine but she doesn't want to do oxytocin because presenting kitten isn't engaged. Its there, but not engaged. So either way, kittens by end of day thursday

That was good that you got her back to the vet to check sizes.  You are wise to get them out of her Thursday if they don't make their entrance into the world on their own by then.

If that kitten gets bigger ,  or is positioned in an awkward way , it could be a problem.

I would have some KY or vaseline on hand.   If you have a kitten stuck, it may help to rub that round the vaginal opening.  If you have to pull,  remember pull  when she is pushing  out.

This article has some useful advice about assisting with birth  ( which you may not need to ,  but best to be prepared)  http://www.fabcats.org/breeders/infosheets/breeding_from_your_cat/felineparturition.html

The other thing is, which you've probably thought of but I should mention,  make sure you either have that vet on call 24/7 or know a 24 hour emergency vet where you can take her if she starts having them Tues or Wed night and gets into difficulty .

Glad she has you and the vet on top of things!

Yep, I have KY and Vaseline on hand, as well as dental floss, betadine, scissors, hemostats, alcohol, towels, thermometer and bulb syringes. Fingers crossed she can do it non her own though

Just to update, Isis temp was 98.4 this morning and she is behaving once again like she is in labor. Her breathing is definitely different than the other day and she is cleaning her belly and whatever part of her bum that she can reach over her enormous belly. I'm leaving her alone and checking in on her about every hour or so, since we are anticipating large kittens I don't want to completely leave her alone, just in case. Wish me luck, because I jut called the vet and they I'd tomorrow is no good since there will only be 1 vet there all day :( so I'm hoping all goes well today for her and the kitties are born naturally

So I updated my other thread earlier but wanted to let everyone know that the kittens (all 6) arrived on their own this afternoon/evening. I had to help her more than I planned, I don't think she's ever done this before. She seemed really confused and didn't attempt to clean them or chew umbilical cords or anything. The smallest weighs 70g and is a lot smaller than the rest, which weigh between 95-108g. I know its tough to tell at this point, but i suspect they are all male. Got 3 white, 2 orange, and 1 dark tabby. Isis is resting and is nursing them great. But I do worry her not being able to hear might be an issue. Anyone ever had a deaf momma cat?

I am so glad she did have a safe birth and kittens are OK.   and it is a good thing you were there and able to help since it seems she was confused .  Maybe she is young.

Maybe someone else has taken in a deaf rescue mama cat  and can comment .

It could potentially be at least somewhat of a problem that she doesn't hear the kittens crying.     Depends on how much she bonds to them , since hopefully she will just stay with them most of the time anyway in the next weeks.  The difficulty could be that if she does go take a break, she won't hear it if they cry and run back to them like a mother cat with normal hearing.        So you may need to just make sure she is caring for them,  but it sounds like once you helped with the birth,   she has settled down and is doing very well.

Another potential problem is she could lie on them accidentally and won't  hear them squeal.   They are pretty good about wriggling out though.

Excellent that you are weighing.  That 70 gram one is a low birth weight but not to the point of being like so small it's scary.   He may gain less at first than the others,  since he is smaller it is just normal.     Try to put him on a back teat and make sure he nurses often and is not pushed away by his bigger littermates.

Again congrats and thanks for the picture of the little family.

Everyone is doing great. Even little guy is over 100g now. She seems to have the mommy thing down now. She does periodically relocate them to my kids dresser drawers but I'm in the process of putting child locks on them to discourage that :) funny since she has a quiet rm to herself and a kitty condo basically.

I did finally look closer and I do have 1 girl. The tabby is def female and the rest are def male. vet says everyone looks great.
