This past weekend I found a small lump under Pascal, my cat's, nipple. She's about six and the shelter said she was spayed in 2010 (though, I think she may still have a piece of an ovary in there because she seems to go into heat). I took her into the vet today and the vet did a fine-needle aspiration. The vet said the cells looked abnormal and sent them off to a lab.

I should get the pathology report in a few days and I'm holding my breath that this is just a scare. However, I want to be able to make some quick decisions if it is cancer. I don't think I would be in favor of chemo for treatment. What are the different treatment options? How effective is chemo? Are there any decent naturalpathic treatments? How do you make a cat comfortable while it battles cancer? What can someone expect if it is cancer?

Many vibes that it is not cancer.

If it is, I think an oncologist would be the best person to answer your questions. The first one I would ask is whether surgery is a viable. If not, then chemo would be the next treatment option. Everything depends on how far the cancer has spread and the prognosis really. You may choose to do palliative care only (may be the only option). I don't know of any "natural" treatments for cancer. I am sure there are things you can do to support either surgery or chemo, but if it is cancer, the cancerous cells must be removed or killed.

As with people, there are cats who have been treated and gone into remission and lived many more years. Others were not as fortunate. Treatment only prolonged life by a few months. So, it is really important to discuss the specifics of your cat's case with an oncologist if in fact test comes back positive for cancer.

Many well wishes for you and Pascal during this difficult waiting time. Uncertainty is always so tough!
