I adopted a 1 year old cat about a month ago. I took him to the vet to get updated on vaccinations, and he took some fleas home with him. I started Max on advantage, sprayed my carpets, and washed all the bedding/clothing he touched (he liked to climb inside my dresser). It's been two days and I haven't seen any fleas, but Max is still itching. He wakes himself up to scratch and spends most of his time grooming. I'm thinking that the bites he had when he started treatment are still itchy. Do you have any advice to relieve his itch? I've been putting neosporin on obviously irritated or wounded areas. My poor kitty is sleeping right now next to me with his leg in his mouth because he fell asleep biting it. I'll call the vet if it isn't better tomorrow but I feel so bad for him.

It's going to take some time for the flea treatment to work through the system and kill the fleas. Even if the fleas are gone, the itching can continue for a little longer due to flea allergy dermatitis, which is caused when the cat is allergic to the flea saliva. Ask your vet about a feline-friendly antihistamine. The one I'm most familiar with is called Chlorpheniramine.

I'd also suggest to vacuum your bed and couches as they can get in them.
