Hey-o-  So I took in my neighbor's cat 4 days ago when she gave birth on my patio ( neighbor gave them to us). I noticed a little brown bug on one kitten butt last night and now today there was one on the floor when mom got up and I rolled over the biggest kitten and saw three quickly scurry into its fur. I am fairly certain they are fleas :(  I read online last night about dawn and flea combs.... and I also saw some stuff about warm water and vaseline... I am looking for a little step by step guidance.

I am thinking in the kitchen sink with a sprayer I should wet the kittens with warm water, comb them with a little vaseline on the comb, wash/comb them with thick dawn solution then rinse them and try to dry/warm them. I will start by taking the whole kitten box into the kitchen and washing mommy first. She will be returned to the mudroom and we will do the rest of the kittens one by one and return them to her as we finish with them. then we will clean the kitten box and return it to the whole group in their room. does this sound like a good game plan?  And repeat twice a day?

They have only been in the mudroom with a hardwood floor so I don't think we need to worry about fleas in the house, right?

My question is - how effective is this dawn/brushing thing? will I be able to get rid of the fleas or is this just going to keep them in check until the kitties are old enough for medications? Can I stop the washing once I don't get fleas out anymore or should I keep going for an extra week to be sure?

Thank you all for your help... I am so worried about all my new little kitties :(

I don't know about the vasiline, I know it is hard to get out of human hair but I don't know about kittens. I'd go with dawn dish soap but be careful not to get it in the kittens mouth, nose, eyes and ears.

I've never done this myself but here is a link on how to do it. Best of luck, fleas are such a downer

I'd change the nest bedding daily and wash them hot and long

Also treating the mom cat is a big part of keeping the fleas at bay. You can call a vet and ask what products would be safe for a nursing cat with very young kittens.
