She had been missing for 5 weeks and returned tonight, very skinny and hungry....and apparently pregnant too. She ate good when we first brought her inside and then she aborted a kitten...just one, no more and that has been hours ago. Since then, she has been eating well, drinking water well, and using the bathroom well. She is resting and seems to be okay other than being so terribly skinny. What are the best tips you all know of to get her back to a healthy weight?

The first thing I would do is take her to a vet. They can fix cats even when they are pregnant and this would be a good option because her body is not in optimal health to carry a pregnancy to term. It will also be the best thing for her to get her fixed.

After the vet examines her for health problems and disease (and hopefully fixes her). You will want to feed her frequent small meals of a good wet food. This should prevent stomach upset and help her to put on weight. A good cheap option is fancy feast classic and the friskies pâté is supposed to be fairly good as well. The average cat should eat 4-6 oz of wet a day but you might want to try to feed her more to put on more weight.

I second the vet visit.  She needs to be checked for parasites, fleas, and to make sure there's nothing else wrong with her other than being skinny.  Also, she really needs to be spayed and if she's aborted one baby already, there may be something going on that needs to be addressed by a vet.  In the meantime, you can feed her some high quality kitten food in small meals throughout the day.  Don't let her gorge herself or she may throw up.
