Hi, I am completing a project on cat behavior and how it is influenced by its home environment. As part of the research I am conducting a questionnaire for cat owners to fill in 26 multiple choice questions about their cat. It would be much appreciated if you could follow the link, it is completely anonymous and easy to do ! Thanks

I did your survey. However, for multiple cat households, most of the questions are asking about a single cat.  I chose to use my oldest, but I do have 2 others that are under 3 years old.

Question #21 was unclear to me: Does it apply to indoor/outdoor cats only, or also to indoor-only cats that are occasionally boarded/stay with friends or relatives?

Hi, yes I did think that a lot of people have more than one cat but it was too hard to take this into account on the questionnaire. Each cat is very different even if from the same household so it was easier to focus on just one cat. Thanks for your extra information :)

Hi, question 21 was referring to outdoor cats and how much time they may regularly spend away from home, not cats that stay with relatives or go to the cattery.

Okay, then I answered it properly (rather, didn't give an answer, because ours is an indoor cat).

uh oh  I answered Question 21 wrong.   so discount one answer that says the longest time ( think it was 5+ days?)  and  change it to no answer.

Same here: I should have skipped it, but I didn't know we could. She hasn't even been away from home even 1 day (at a cattery, etc.) AND she's an indoor cat. I've also only had her for about a month, so there are a lot of things I still don't know: for example, on the list of things she's afraid of, she's only experienced cars, fireworks, rain, other animals (sort of -- there's a dog nearby that barks sometimes -- and she's scared of the barking), strangers, plastic bags, and a dishwasher. So, I don't know if she's afraid of the other things or not.

Hi, well the questionnaire is just to get an idea of possible links of what effects the cat's behavior. When I have the results to this I will see which things seem to correspond and study them in more detail. I have over 50 completed so far so if there are a couple of mistakes in some, it shouldn't make too much of a difference, thanks

#26:  Ritz is afraid of thunder and lightning, not rain.  And to be even more particular, she isn't afraid of children's voices, but is afraid of crying babies.  Cats meowing on the tv don't bother her at all.

I completed it, but I wish there had been an Other option for the question about discipline.  I don't shout but I say No and that's all I do.  But there wasn't an other option for this question so I just didn't check anything.

I left the How do you discipline Your Cat question blank, because "redirect" wasn't an option. That's how we train our cats, by rewarding appropriate behavior and redirecting inappropriate.

I also didn't answer the fear one. They're not afraid of washers or driers, but are afraid of the vacuum cleaner and the overhead fan. My understanding is those are quite common.

And the only place they were disallowed for years was the kitchen counters, which is also quite common for people here.

So I suspect part of the survey questions are culturally based. Are you from the UK or somewhere in Europe, tangomarmalade?
