Has anyone recently replaced their mattress set. If so, what did you buy and do you like it. We have shopped and shopped and still can't decide. We actually purchased from Sears, then cancelled the order. We have to use a 12 inch mattress with the low profie foundation because our beds are the old antique oak beds that sit up high. I am short and don't want to use a step stool to get on the bed. Yesterday we drove sixty some miles to the nearest Sears store. We picked out a set we could use made by Serta. I wrote down all the info, intending to order online. Now I have read some reviews and they are all bad on Serta mattresses. Any suggestions or information about your experience would be appreciated.

We are in the market for a new mattress, too, I'm pretty sure we are going to go with natural latex. I found this site (link below) to be extremely helpful and my husband and I are going to use some of her tests for picking out a compatible mattress. Just lying on it with "this seems fine" (which is what we did last time) is not enough to get the right support and restful sleep we all need.

http://www.themattressunderground.c...-for-and-find-the-best-mattress--for-you.html

We also will never again buy a mattress from a big store; the site explains how smaller businesses work with you to get a better quality mattress fit for your needs, without additional cost. Also, you can order a mattress that can be flipped (not available in the big stores), which greatly increases the life of the mattress! I'm in the process of calling businesses here in town and getting a feel who I want to deal with. Good luck with your search, definitely look through the site though. Not only does it have some really good pointers to think about, but also has feedback about the best stores to deal with in whatever area you live.

I just bought one 3 months ago and I got a set from Original Mattress Factory.  They are only in certain states though and they have their own factories.  They have one here along with their stores.  I wanted what is now an old fashioned mattress that can be flipped and they still make them.  I got the Orthopedic Ultra Plush and it is really comfortable.   I even signed up to get an email notice when it's time to rotate or flip. That's how I know I've had three months I got my first email 2 days ago.

We've bought 2 mattresses in the last year and a half. One for DD and one for us.  We got both from Sleepy's; so a stand a lone mattress retailer.  I found their staff to be helpful.  DH was interested in a Tempurpedic; we ended up with a Comforpedic.  I can't remember the brand off the top of my head; but it has a more "cushy" top than the tempurpedic.  Sometimes I love my bed and sometimes not as much.  I haven't figured out yet if it's me or the bed or just the nights I don't get solid sleep.

DD has a traditional, inner spring mattress.  It's softer; but not too soft.  But I have to say; after having the memory foam type mattress, I notice the movement in her bed more!  DH says he doesn't usually notice me getting in and out of bed.  I always go to bed well after him so it's nice then.  And he doesn't disturb me when he gets up earlier.

I do wish we'd gotten the low profile box springs. DD does use a step stool to get into and out of bed.  I'm usually ok with the height; but during my pregnancies it did make getting in harder.  I always rolled back out.

There is no way in our town to buy a flippable mattress. They don't sell them. I am never going to order a bed I can't lay on first.
That being said, I drove sixty miles to the Sears store, picked out at Serta, read reviews that said they are all sagging in a short time, and with a life span of four to six years. Scratch Serta. In our local small town we only have a few stores to pick from. They are America's Mattress, Crystal Coast Mattress Rx,, Dunns Beds and The Mattress Place. Selections are limited. I am looking for a brand name here, or some kind of criteria to go by when picking out a matress besides it must be flippable. I want a flippable one, but it is not going to happen here.:lol3: For example, did you choose a memory foam or an innerspring type. How has it held up. What is the brand name.

I bought my second new mattress on box spring last year. The first was 2 years prior.  I learned a great deal from my first standard bed, so I made different choices for the second.

The first bed I bought had the 9 inch box spring, with a high pillow top mattress.  And because I was going from a waterbed to a standard mattress, I went with a plush mattress. It was like sleeping on a cloud. However, because the box spring was so high, and the mattress was about 18" or more tall, between that and the frame, I had to literally climb into bed, and jump out, or turn over on my belly and ease my way off the bed.  It was awful.  When I had my surgery my brother took the bed off the frame and put it on the floor. It was a much better height for me.

Unfortunately because the pillow top was so soft, it took on indents of my body that did not recover, so I ended up sleeping in a gully and it was hard to turn over.  Also with a pillow top you can't turn over the mattress, so you rotate it (head to foot, foot to head etc) every 6 months. I left that bed behind due to bed bugs and when I moved I had a new bed delivered.

The second bed I went with a 6 inch box spring and the mattress was a bit firmer than the first one. It still has a pillow top, but it's a 2 inch one instead of 3 inch.  And I don't have problems with gullies in the middle of the bed.

Memory foam is bad because it leaves body dents that don't recover.

So far as where you buy it, just make sure that the pillow top is also covered in the warranty of the bed.  The first place I bought my bed from wouldn't honour the warranty of the pillow top issues (gullies) because they said the pillow top wasn 't covered.

What company made the set you now have.

I looked it up; our bed is made by Simmons.  I had a Beauty Rest from about age 9 to in my early 20's after DH and I got married.  I loved that bed.  Even when I was in high school; if I had a sleepover friends would comment how comfortable the bed was.

Our memory foam (what comforpedic/tempurpedic really is) recovers.  It also has a very long warranty.  But regardless; I don't think from what you've said that this is the type of bed you are looking for.

Mines a regular old fashioned innerspring type.  I got a memory foam topper to get a couple more years out of my last mattress, it was 17 years old when I finally replaced it.  The memory foam was okay but I think I prefer the innerspring type.  For me it was just a personal choice thing.  The memory foam recovered fine I just never really got used to the feel of it.

Who is the maker of your mattress. At this point I really don't know what I am looking for. That is why I opened this thread. I am open to all suggestions given here. I want names so I can maybe try them at a store here.

We just bought a Tempurpedic to replace a very old set we've had forever.  It's a Tempur Weightless Supreme--more reasonably priced than some of the Tempurpedic line and and not as "squishy" feeling as some of them can be.  I'm not 100% sold on it, I've always liked a firm mattress but hubby's had some back and hip surgeries and needs something supportive but giving.  We tried several of them at our local futon store and liked that one the best.

It's being delivered today in fact so I'll post back in a day or two with a review after we've tried it out!

I'll look and see if I can get you the exact information on which one we have.  We laid on a lot of them in the store!

I do think they take some getting used to.  I prefer a softer bed; so the one we got had more "cloud" foam at the top.  It felt like it adjusted to the curves of my body better since I'm a side to belly sleeper.  It wasn't the cheapest bed; or the most expensive.  But it's supposed to last so that helps. Our old mattress wasn't more than 6-7 years old I think.  I injured my back in college and every now and then it still hurts.  I also get some nice sciatic pain thanks to my pregnancies.  They recommended getting a high quality mattress cover; since moisture is bad for them.  I purchased the same brand of cover for my 3 year old's bed, which is just a traditional innerspring.  I didn't want any nighttime accidents to ruin what we'd purchased!  I hope to not have to replace her mattress ever.

lt might be worth getting one of those that you can "dial" the firmness on each side of the bed.

Mine is about 10 years old and has pillow top on both sides so it can be flipped. l think it's King Koil, in the old Body Break style.

A friend of mine swears by Kings Down mattresses. She and l went shopping for hers together and she paid a fortune for the set, but she says it was well worth it as it's an investment for many years of comfort.

We have a Sealy Posturepedic plush, extra-firm for a queen size bed. I will never have an extra-firm mattress again. We bought it originally for my back and it seemed comfortable at first. But there are some nights when I just want to go to bed.....and sink. Can't do that with an extra-firm mattress. I flip it over every six months and, once a year, I flip it end over end. It's probably about 20 years old now and we are needing another set, too. We're not sure what we want to get this time around, but we know it won't be extra-firm.

Maybe the Tempurpedics do take time to get used to--I'm not impressed after Night 1.  I still prefer my firm mattress, and so far I don't like the sinking into the foam feeling.  Hubby thinks it's great, though.

I wish really that I could find a store that sells double sided mattresses that can be flipped over, but I am getting told they don't make them anymore.

Serta does make double sided mattresses but they are part of their hotel collection.  I think you can get one but it is a special order which would be like ordering one off the internet.  I really think this  deal about double sided mattresses is a way for companies to increase their profit margin and decrease the life of the mattress.  People will come back sooner for another mattress.  The man who started and is still CEO of Original Mattress Factory used to be a vice president at Serta and that's part of his advertising claim.

I called Serta. They are adamant about saying double sided mattresses are not made by other companies anymore. But that is wrong. Several have posted on this thread that they have them. Serta told me they will only make a double sided mattress if you have been to a hotel and slept on one. That way you know for sure that you like it as they are not returnable. I am so frustrated with this issue I am considering putting toppers from Belk's on my mattresses and forgetting about buying new ones. I did find a local store that sells a double sided mattress made by Park Place, but it is on a foundation, not a box spring. I think that would be just about as comfortable as putting the mattress on the floor and sleeping on it, no give whatsoever.
