I was at first going to post in health, but I thought that perhaps it was a nutrition problem. One of my kittens, Daisy, has been having a bit of loose stool. Both she and my other kitten, Smokey, are on a grain-free wet diet of Innova Evo. Since the wet stool started I began adding pumpkin to their diet. The cans of Evo are relatively cheat ($2.23 for a 12oz can) and where I live the raw food is very expensive. I do give them Nature's Variety Instinct Raw, as well as Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried raw (mixed with water) on occassion. I wanted to keep them on one thing to see if the diarrhea cleared up, but it hasn't in Daisy. Both of their poops are incredibly stinky, and I had thought that maybe the litter just wasn't covering it. I'm currently using a couple different Arm & Hammer litters. Should I just try a different litter or should I change their diet?

Have you tried probiotics? This tends to help with soft stool, but might not help with the smell. If you went 100% raw the smell would probably improve but I understand the cost might be too high right now. Homemade raw like the recipe on www.catinfo.org would be cheaper than both canned and commercial raw but I understand many people do not want to invest in a grinder. If you live in the states hare today is supposed to be cheaper so that might be an option.

Something you have probably thought of but have they been dewormed?

As for the litter I don't think switching would help but you should clean the litter box at least once a day if not more and I find those litter genie pails are pretty good at holding in the smell.

it doesnt make  a difference. My 6 month old has neve had that problem regardless of what she eats. She has been dewormed.Could it be

They've both been dewormed and checked for parasites. Completely clean on both counts. I do scoop every day and use a litter genie. I honestly don't have the time or energy for homemade raw, although I have considered it. I know there are concerns about feeding human-grade raw because of salmonella, etc. I'm kind of at my wits end. I hate coming home to an apt that smells like cat even with air fresheners.

I'm thinking Daisy at least is allergic to something in the foods; can you take a quick glance at the ingredients among all the foods you are feeding, and seeing if they contain some of the same ingredients, like chicken or pea (derivatives too)?

What food are you giving Smokey?

I might try feeding boiled chicken and rice, to see what that does.  And cut out the pumpkin for a few days.

In rare cases, probiotics can actually cause diarrhea.  Try reducing the amount you give.

I know it's frustrating and puzzling; hang in there!

They eat the same thing from the same bowl. I'll have to see if there are peas. The food is chicken and turkey, but she has no problem with raw chicken.
