I want  to  start my kitten eating a good high protien/ grain free food. Right now hes eathing wellness wet food mostly and I do give him a tiny bit of kibble which is  Royal Canin Baby cat. They are my fosters so I wasn't keeping them but now I'm keeping the one so I want to swich him.

My other 5 adult cats eat Merick BG wet food as most of thier diet. I will also give them some raw commercial food like Rad Cat about twice a week along with raw chicken liver and hearts about once a week. They do get some kibble I was feeding them the BG dry a few kibbles as treats. They are now on Taste of the Wild Grain free again just as treats maybe a handful.

Whats a good food to get my kitten started on is he too young to start offering some commercial raw hes only 6 weeks old. I don't want him to get an upset tummy so whatever I do I'm going to do it slowly. I really don't want to feed him wellness as I've heard it causes urinary stones in males.

I looked into Go Now food but its kinda pricey I've been checking out different food sites to see if I can find it cheaper.

Any advice would be greatly apprciated.

I dunno if raw food is good for kittens or not but I don't see why you can't try it and see. I myself use Now! for my cats, one's a kitten and one's a senior cat and they both love it. I buy mine on petflow.com it's the cheapest place I could find online since none of the stores in my city carry it. it can be pricey but I buy the big bags and they last up to 3 months. hope this helps somehow.

Well, if you're actually interested in feeding raw, 6 weeks is not too young to offer it, if you're in the process of weaning him, or he's weaned already. Most commercial raw food is balanced and complete; it will be much easier on him to learn to eat raw, as it is what his body is designed to eat. Feral cat moms don't cook the mice they catch for their babies. :dk: Raw is very highly bioavailable to a cat, and one of the easiest things for their systems to digest. :)

There are several threads in the raw forum where people are in the process of weaning their 5 week old kittens directly to raw.

But if you want good commercial canned food suggestions, any canned food that is made of mostly meat, fat and supplements. That's what is biologically appropriate for a cat. Here's a site, written by a vet (Dr. Lisa Pierson) that can help: http://www.catinfo.org

Fish should be fed infrequently.

Dr. Pierson has a section on choosing commercial canned foods, and she put a LOT of work into putting together a list with most of the commercially avaiable canned, raw, and prescription foods, so you can compare them all on a dry matter basis. They don't list ingredients, but you can note any foods that are high protein, low carbohydrate in that center column (the dry matter basis column), and then look up ingredients: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=cannedfoods
