Hi, Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to help a very overweight cat lose some pounds. One of her front legs is deformed, so she is walking on three legs, which is hard to do when you are shaped like a watermelon! I have tried diet foods, but she never lost any weight. It is hard, because I have 14 other cats that are various sizes, none as large as her, though. If anyone has any ideas that don't involve removing her from the group, I would be grateful to hear them.

is there any way you could feed her separately from the rest so she won't feel like she has to compete for food? she might be overeating due to that. with my cat she would always overeat so I started feeding her very small meals, 4 times a day, equaling no more than a 1/3 cup altogether(which is what the vet recommended) and she lost 2 lbs in a month and is still losing. hope that helps

We went through this with my Callie, minus the deformed leg.  What I did was talk to my vet, first.  He said what you want to do is gradual weight loss as a drastic loss can do more harm on the system.  He recommended low carbs and exercise, just like for humans.  Limit the dry, add in lots of grain-free wet and try to get your kitty moving, even if it's walking upstairs to the food dish.  Go to scheduled feedings so you can see who is eating what and how much.  Also, portion out the food so you can be sure she eats only what she's supposed to eat.  Don't free feed.  Doing this will be good for all the kitties, not just her.  You could put up a small cage in your kitchen and feed her in there until everyone's finished eating and the leftovers cleaned up.
