PLEASE HELP… BAD VET VISIT… HARMFUL TO CAT AND

A LOT OF VET BILLS TO SHOW FOR IT…

My sister took in a cat almost a year ago.  It was a stray that was new to the group of ferrules that we take care of.  It looked as though it may have been a domestic cat at one point.  She had a missing tail, but it didn't look as though it was an accident or anything like that, because it was so healed over.  I discovered that perhaps it was a Manx.  No one has been able to determine that yet.

When my sister took the cat,  she brought her to Petco for an exam and shots.  A year has passed, just about and the cat has been showing some problems.

She recently took the cat to a vet because she’s been scratching her ears and to check on another problem that the cat has been having.   Her cat (Trixie) is secreting from her anal area and it is leaving a yellow-brownish red discharge on everything she lays on.  She can go to the litter box just fine, there are no problems there and her urine and feces look fine.  However, she does poop quite a bit.

HERE’S THE PROBLEM…  She had the cat examined, the vet told her there was a bad ear infection, so they proceeded to take care of the ear problem and they also excreted the cat’s anal glands.

I need to clarify that my sister just went through knee surgery and was struggling with a knee infection herself; otherwise she would have taken her cat to the vet sooner.  I was helping my sister to recover and I have five cats of my own that I take care of, so it would have been very hard for me to do it for her.

When she brought the cat home, it couldn't walk, kept falling, wouldn't eat and it could not hear a thing.  My sister was alarmed and called the vet.  Initially they were trying to avoid another visit with the cat present.  My sister was so concerned and told them that they have to do something.  She brought that cat back and they agreed to keep her over night.  They gave her a complete blood panel and physical.  To find out that she has hyperthyroid as well.

They next day, she brought her home and has been doing everything she can to feed the cat.

The cat is getting better but the dizzy=ness is still there, she is still deaf and even with two follow ups they have not been able to tell her anything.  The last visit they had her see a different Dr., never addressed the anal problem or the hyperthyroid.  They announced that the other Dr. was taking continuing education classes.

SHE STILL HAS NO ANSWERS AND THEY SENT HER HOME WITH LIQUID ANTIBIOTICS TO BE TAKEN ORALLY AND HAS ABOUT A $1000,00+ in vet bills to show for it.

She feels as though they damaged her cat and the follow ups have been terrible to say the least.  She is considering going to another vet, but feels they should handle it and be accountable.  Does anyone have any suggestions or advise.  She does not want to harm a Dr's. medical license, she knows the hard work and commitment it takes to obtain a license to practice medicine, but they should at the very least, try their best to help her solve this problem.  She obviously loves and cares about her cat very much.

She has asked them for all medical records, which they have supplied.

Anything would be helpful???

Thank you

Cathy

Sorry to say it, but I think another vet is in order. Here is a thread from 2002 discussing the same ear issues: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/7443/ear-cleaned-now-deaf

I would get the kitty's records, and bring them to the new vet visit.

I understand wanting to hold the original vet accountable, but if they have been unable to resolve the problem, have not scoped the cat's ears (for free), and have done nothing to resolve the problem... at this point, kitty is more important. Complaints can be filed with the State Vet Board, the vet directly, etc. later.

I second that. A second opinion is in order. Your cats health is more important then making your current vet fix something they already had plenty of time to fix by now and haven't.
