hi, how is everyone doing? I have a problem, my seven year old male cat is pooping on the floor now.  this is strange, he was wanting to jump up on the window unit in the room where the litter box is to check on birds in the tree outside. well, anyway we would shew him off the air conditioner unit, one night late my husband and I were up watching TV in the living room and we thought we heard him on the window again, so my husband got up and went in there and attempted to shew him from the unit again, but he was in the litter box using the bathroom, that was what we heard, so now since that incident he has stopped pooping in the box and just going anywhere he pleases, random areas anywhere in the apartment. how I wish we could rewind history and handle things differently because now I feel that somehow we gave him the message to not poop there, what can I do, this has been going on for a month now.  he spends most of his time in the living area on his tree at the window, so for now I have moved the litter box in the living area to have quick access, but this has not even helped, I found poop in the living area today again.

I would start by getting a second litter box and put it in one of the areas he is pooping and see if this solves the problem. Another option is to confine him in the bathroom with the litter boxes and retrain him to go.

He may have stopped using the litter box because of the shooing incident but there are a lot of reasons cats stop using the litter box. Here is a good article that gives tips from a vet on litterbox problems (http://catinfo.org/?link=litterbox). This is really a great article and gives you some amazing tips to follow to get your cat to use the litter box.

It is also a good idea to take a cat to the vet who suddenly stops using the litter box.

thank you for your reply, I will read the article and I am calling the vet tomorrow, but they were just seen by the vet 2 months ago for their yearly, they are okay, I just really feel like it was us that made him stop using the box because we really thought he was up on the air conditioner again.  and my husband really yelled at him that night.

It for sure may be stress related, but it is a good ideas to talk to the vet. You can also try a feliway diffuser and spirit essences really help with stress. There is one formulated for trauma which may be helpful (http://store.jacksongalaxy.com/Trauma-Free-p/trauma-free.htm). I would also have a talk with your husband about not yelling at the cat if he poops outside of the litter box because this will only make the situation worse.
