My cat had her 5 kittens a week ago. I've been weighing them daily and all are doing well.

Unfortunately, she has now taken the kittens to an area behind the sofa under a table that, without serious furniture rearrangement, I can't get access to. Should I leave her, and them, there or should I move them back to the box they were in before? There is no box, where she has taken them, to keep the kittens from straying and I'm worried that they will crawl off under the sofa and mum won't be able to retrieve them.... I wouldn't be able to see if they were wandering off at all.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

If desperate enough, you can surely let them be there.  But it is apparently no good solution.

The problem is, when you bring them back, the mom may always move them again.  You cant won over the mom in such cases when she wants to move them!

The usual trick is to have her in some easy controlled room, locked in.  so even if she changes her nest, she is still there easy to see.

Next question, is if she has any legitime reason to want to move?

Her nest going smelly?  Ie, are you changing the bedclothes every day, or at very least, every third day?

Is she stressed by anything where she is?  So she may think it will be a little better at the new place?

The daily weighting you did is seldom a problem, if you do it respecfully.  Even semi-ferale moms allows it, so this shouldnt be the main problem for her.

Good luck!

Hi,

I don't have a spare room that I can put her in and she wouldn't like to be locked in any room as she wants to be near me. She will leave the kittens when they are sleeping to come and get attention from me.

I have been changing the sheet in the bottom of the nest box daily. There is no more than a sheet in there as it is very warm (we are in the middle of a heatwave) and to have a blanket in there would make it too warm.

She is fine with me weighing them as I do it nice and quickly and if any of the kittens squeak I put them back before it alarms her.

I can hear when the kittens move about that their claws are catching on the carpet so it will be awkward for them where they are now.

I guess I'll just have to see how it goes as I can't think of a solution.

Thanks for your reply.

Could you block off furniture etc that she could move them under, and then provide a nest in a room where you spend a lot of time, so she can be with you?

I've moved some things around and I've managed to block off the area she has taken them to so that they can't stray farther along the back of the sofa or under it and they seem to be ok. The room they are in is the room I spend most of my time in. I work from home.

Thanks anyway. x
