Hello, my cat Midget had one kitten last night at 7:15. She did everything that she was supposed to, cleaned it up, ate the afterbirth. For about 3 hours after she was panting heavily but then she stopped. She has been drinking and eating, I'm not sure about the bathroom, and even hid her kitten in the middle of the night. We have 4 other cats, 2 other females and 2 males. One of the males has been continually mounting her over the last few days and even after she had her first. We also have 2 dogs that have even tried mounting her and will not leave her alone. I have moved the kitten and birthing bed to an upstairs bedroom where it is warm and calm and have told everyone to leave them alone. Midget will go up and nurse the kitten if I take her up and while I was moving the kitten from the small hiding place it started crying and Midget came running. My question is this, her stomach still looks plump and is firm. She will let me gently touch her stomach but not for long. I don't feel movement but up towards her spine there is a large lump. Could this be another kitten? she had gone back to normal but now is laying around and lightly panting again. I have moved her to the closed off room and she keeps leaving and coming back downstairs but the dogs and other cats wont leave her alone. Should I just leave her locked in the room with the kitten? since she is panting and still has a swollen tummy is going to have more? One other question I had is what if there is another kitten but it is dead, will she eventually deliver it or do I need to rush her off to the vet? She has been acting like normal, wanting a lot of attention last night, but when she lays downs she is panting and will sometimes softly meow at me.

1.  Whatever you do, have her and her kitten separated in her own room.  She shall be unstressed, this is the Law number 1..

If the other animals were best friends with her, we could perhaps discuss other solutions, but NOT as it is here.

2.  Such situations are fairly common, one kitten more or just some swelling?

The standard answer, is, you perhaps dont need to know exactly.

a) If everything is OK and she is calm and contend, you can look and see.

b) But if she is any sort distress, double your watch and be prepared to contact your vet.

Here we have the scenario from b).   Everthing is not OK.

We dont know if she has still one inside, which is quite probable, or if she is stressed, which she apparently is, and this is why she  moves here and there, or when lays down, is panting.

Im not sure if it is time to phone the vet, but you must keep sharp watch, and proceed to calm her.

Please continue with your reports and follow up questions.

Are your other animals  neutered?  If not, and you arent a breeder, please consider to do it.

I hope my answer gave you some help.

Good luck!

Thank you for the response. I have been keeping her isolated and as long as i'm with her she seems calm other than panting. It does feel like there may be one or two lumps in her stomach now where last night there was just one up by her spine, now one is closer to her butt and another is up about mid stomach. Other than panting she seems ok, she is cleaning and nursing the one kitten she does have and has been drinking water. The panting is becoming faster and she always keeps her eyes on me. I have just spent close to two hours sitting by her side and petting her. I needed to leave for a few to check on children but am keeping a very close eye on her. While I was up there she would come out of the birthing box I made and come lay down beside me or even lay on my lap. Other than the panting she seems fine, not meowing like she is in pain like she was when she was having the kitten, just a small quite meow that says pet me. She will lay down and even close her eyes while i'm petting her. How long is it ok to let her be like this before calling a vet?

The other thing that she has just started doing is when i'm in the room petting her she keeps presenting herself as if she were in heat. does this mean anything? other than that and panting she is acting very normal but wants me to be with her at all times.

Cats can have stops in labor, as mentioned, both hours and days.

In these cases, she is calm and contend.

Here, she is in labor.  (unless rests of the high stress!).

I wouldnt want to let her labor more than max 12 hours.

Do you have a good vet you are his paying patient?  It has been now several hours, no?

I think you shall phone now and ask advice,

Some forumites tells their birthing cat seems to be in heat.  I think it is the hormone swalls.  Perhaps also the pressure on the everything including nerves down there...

Probably she does sends lotsa of hormones, literally clouds, this causing both your other cats and even dogs are on her...

Good luck!

Thank you again. She doesn't really seem stressed as long as I'm with her. she lays there and almost falls asleep. It has been around 4 hours of off and on panting. She is drinking and even ate a little food. She is tending to the kitten, cleaning, feeding, and protecting. anytime someone else comes in the room she jumps right in the box and lays on the kitten to hide it.

Again thank you, your advice has been really helpful and I don't feel as worried about her but will keep a very close eye on her through the night.

One more quick question. Midget had been panting for several hours. I had to leave for about an hour and half. When I got home she had gotten out of the room. I found her and put her back. I started checking the house to see if maybe she had gone somewhere else to have another kitten and I checked the litter box and saw poop with some blood in it. Could this have been what was wrong? could she have just been constipated? Now she isn't panting and I don't feel the lumps that I was earlier describing but she still has a slightly plump belly that is firm and she won't let me touch it for more than 30 seconds.

Sorry, I dont know.  Every variant is possible.

You could and should search through the house twice and thrice again.  But if they were stillborn, she may have eaten them - thus you wont find them even if you look at exactly the right places.

IF they are alive, they may still be living.

Have some wet sugar on their gums, best dextrose sugar, next white caro syrup, or honey - common sugar as last alternative - gives quick energy.   Give them warmth, massage up some...

Delivering cats has not often constipation, the nature has it so they often get rare poop.  This poop you found, was it a hard sausage??  BEING one of these few cases they had hard poo?

Sorry, I dont have a real good answer.

Good luck!

Thanks. Yea after she had her kitten her belly was firm and lumpy almost felt like there was one or two more. She acted like she was going into labor again but it stopped then the next day she started again and was panting heavily for about 4 hours. She escaped the room and went to the litter box. While I was checking the house to make sure she didn't have anymore somewhere else I noticed that there was fresh poop in the litter box with some blood in it. I found Midget and took her back to the room. She wasn't panting anymore and her belly was no longer firm or lumpy. Now it's been 3 days and she has not shown any labor signs or had any other kittens. She has been tending to the one she had, leaving for room from time to time mainly when she needs to go to the bathroom. All in all I honestly think what I thought to be more kittens was just backed up poop. I had read that mamma cats will stop eating a day or two before birthing but she ate right up til the time she gave birth.

On a different note, I have noticed since yesterday that she will pull the kitten out of the bed I made for her. I have found her in the middle of the room twice and once next to the bed. I keep putting her back and Midget doesn't mind. The room that she is in is one of the bedrooms. The children were gone up until yesterday and I told them to stay out unless they were going to bed and to leave Midget and the baby alone. This morning I found one of them petting the kitten and picking her up. This afternoon I went up to check on them and see if Midget had gone back in from her bathroom break and found the kitten hidden. Why would she start hiding the kitten now? Could be because the kids are not doing what I told them and messing with kitten too much? As far as I know they have been staying out but I can't swear they have been staying out and leaving them alone. Could her hiding the kitten be her way of trying to tell us to leave her alone?

You never know with moms. If they want to move they move, Your theory is also fully possible.
