Do different brands taste different? I thought it would be relatively the same, so I got a big bag from Amazon. I had previously purchased Stewart's from Petsmart, and at the time Poppy loved it. Now she doesn't like it, would like to know if the change in brand is a possibility. I figured since it's one ingredient it wouldn't taste a whole different.

I bet they do taste different, just like if you buy Wholelife chicken and Purebites chicken, the texture is completely different, and with cats, texture means a LOT.

BTW, my understanding is the Stewarts is actually raw freeze dried liver, and all the other brands are cooked.  That would also make a difference.

:yeah: Stewart's is raw, all others are cooked, and there is a definite difference between most brands. Spooky only eats Etta Says FD liver, even though the Whole Life FD chicken liver seems almost exactly the same to me. :dk:

Thanks. Come to think of it, I could smell the Stewart's from a mile away, this other brand doesn't stink as much.

So today I went to Petsmart and they had the Stewart's brand on sale. I picked up a couple tubs.

When I got back Poppy was shying away from me--we've had to take her to the vet a lot recently. "No, no, Poppy," I said, and I showed her the liver tub. She immediately started sniffing the sealed container. That was it. After she caught a whiff she was clamoring around it. She put her head between me and the container several times so that I couldn't see where to pull the plastic tabs off and open it. Somehow I finally got it open and she was all over me/the tub, letting out soft meows. So yeah, brand matters.

And it still stinks from a mile away.

Haha! Cats are so specific about what they like

BTW, I recently tried freeze dried lamb lungs, it was in my Pawalla box.  WOW, my two are utterly crazy about that stuff. Totally stalking me for it. But, talk about stinky?  Each time I open up the package I want to, well, I won't elaborate but I'm sure you know what I would say

Freeze dried lamb lungs??? Where in the world did you get that?

Stewarts treats are all different sizes, but you can easily break them off. They are marketed for dogs, but it is a single ingredient, so you can give it to cats, just break it into smaller pieces.

After purchasing a big bag of another brand and having to give it away to my coworker, I think I'm sticking to Stewart's unless there's a really small trial size bag of another brand. The other brand might have to raw, too, in order for me to try it.

My tub says "up to 100 pieces." I can't remember for sure, but I'd say if I was giving out 1-2 treats a night, about 3 months. They have big tubs, too, but Petsmart only had beef liver when I went and I don't know if Poppy likes beef liver, so I'd only want to buy a small tub of that. At my Petsmart the little tubs (3 oz.) are only $6.07 right now.

Just google Freeze dried lamb lung and you'll get lots of hits.  Chewy.com sells them, Amazon sells them (maybe not the brand shown above, but  I know Merrick makes some, Primal makes some, maybe even Bravo?

I like to make my own most of the time. I just boil the liver, chop it up into pieces and bake it at 200 degrees for 5 hours. I like to crack the door open to dry them out better but it does stink the house up.

Wow. I just never heard of eating the lungs, so it never would've occurred to me to run internet searchs on freeze-dried lungs.

So then the liver is shelf storagable, just like the freeze-dried? Liver is cheap, maybe I'll try it.

If you're using it for flavor, there's nothing wrong with boiling/baking liver. If you're using it for its nutritional value, a lot of the vitamins and minerals are lost in that boiling water, so that should be added back into something the cats eat.

...as to the freeze dried lung, there's probably lots of things you might not have thought to look for. :lol3: Freeze dried hearts, freeze dried green tripe (as Pat pointed out!). I use human supplements to provide freeze dried beef brain, thymus, etc. :lol3: A great topper for Tuxedo is freeze dried kidney powder.

I did feed raw back in the fall, so I'm not surprised at freeze-dried hearts and tripe--in fact, I went to a holistic pet store today, and I saw them! The human supplements for beef brain, thymus, and kidney powder are new ones on me, though. I guess after hearing about freeze-dried lungs, though, those aren't as surprising.

Since we're on the subject of organ meats, do cats in general like them? As I mentioned, the store I went to today had different types of freeze-dried organ meats, but they were $10 a bag. I didn't want to lay out the $ and then have Poppy say "Nope."
