Hi,

A friend of mine has a 3 year old cat that never has solid stools, ever. He always has light brown diarrhea and he often has incredibly horrible gas. She hasn't done anything about it and I am concerned for his health. Does anyone know what could be causing this in an older cat?

to TCS, and thank you for your concern for this cat.

It could be any number of things, including internal parasites like worms, a bacterial infection or food intolerance. She really should consult a vet to pinpoint and treat the problem.

Some common causes of diarrhea are listed in this article:
Identifying Common Ailments in Cats Adopted from Animal Shelters and Rescue Groups

There are also quite a number of threads on diarrhea which might give you an idea: http://www.thecatsite.com/newsearch?search=diarrhea&type=35

Aw, you're sweet for caring!

It can be difficult to approach people with what feels like criticism to them. In this case, perhaps discussing the issue in terms of her health. If she had constant diarrhea and horrible gas for a long time, wouldn't she consider seeing a doctor about it? Anyone that's ever had gas knows it can be extremely uncomfortable, if not downright painful. It's no different for a cat. :(
