I think my cat is getting close to giving birth, but I cant really tell because.shes.a.long haired cat. I can feel the kittens move, but shes not that big to me. She barely looks pregnant, even though im 100% sure she is. What are the signs of labor, and how can i tell how far along she is? ive already made her birthing suite complete with water food, and toys

My cat is a long hair cat as well and I cut most of the hair off on her belly. It would have been impossible for the babiesto find her tits with the long hair. But I noticed she was pregnant 4 weeks ago. And ahe atill hasn't delivered...loat her muscas plug two days ago but no contrations. Ive read u can monitor their temp. Its suppose to be around 101-102 and drop under 100 when in labor... I can visually see the babies moving for a week now...playing the waiting game here also

How big they are depends partly on how many kittens there is. Few kittens - not so big.  You can feel them about 2 weeks before the delivery, so you can have your rough estimation from this...

The advice of cutting of some hairs may be good. Now, most longhaired manage anyway, so it is not necessary - but do it if it is appropriate for you.

Re: measuring the temp; yes it is true, although I myself think it is rather disturbing to get temp measured in the behind, esp when in this condition. They dont need any extra stress.

So my suggestion is, you either use such a modern ear thermomether, or measure in the armpit (foreleg).  It isnt so exactly, but you dont need exact measurement, you just want to see the big drop.

If in the behind it is 102F, in the armpit of foreleg it will be about 99.

So start measuring now, so you know what her normal temperature is....

Another measure: get a scale for measuring the weigh of kittens every day, and their development. Best is a kitchen or mail scale which measures in grammes.  The rule of thum is they shall gain 10+ grammes every day....

Good luck!
