I read it should be done between 4-6 months for females. I'm not sure about males.
My little guy is a premie and I wasn't sure if that will affect the timing window.

I'm planning way in advance because he is just a week old.

He should be ready by 4 months. Some start maturing earlier than others. I would think yours would be slower than most. It depends on how he does over the next few months. Keep us updated on his progress, please.

Thank you!
We are going to the vet in the morning for his first check up. He started bleeding from his anus earlier today with his bowel movements.
The vet thinks he may have an intestinal tear and wants to start him on antibiotics but other than that my little man seems to be doubling in size everyday!

I was wondering the same thing. I have my little guy booked in for January (he will be 4 months) but a fellow cat owner friend of mine said that it could be too soon and possibly cause damage, so now i am all worried :( The vet did not seem bothered by this time though, so I am sure it is okay???

He will be fine.  Cats can be neutered as early as 2 months and 2 lbs but many vets do like to wait a little longer.  We're seeing this misinformation about neutering cats cropping up more and more.  I think people have heard this about large breed dogs, which does have a basis in fact, and assuming it is true for cats as well.

I get all my foster kittens fixed at 2 months and we never had a problem. However, if this is a cat you're keeping that doesn't have to be adopted as a kitten I would wait until 4-5 months. There is no reason to do it sooner for cats that are not strays or fosters. At 4-5 months old they are definitely old enough and the young ones tend to recover quicker than the adults. At my previous job we didn't even intubate male cats because a neuter surgery is so quick and because the incision is so small there are no stitches either. It's really a pretty minor surgery on male cats and the risks are minimal.

It's more major surgery for females so imo it's best to wait until 4 months. With females there is a risk with waiting longer because some start going into heat very early and it's much more difficult to spay a female in heat. Because females can go into heat every few weeks you have to, ideally, time the spay for a time when she's not in heat and that can be hard to do. If your female cat is going to be outside or around intact males a spay before 5 months is crucial. I got an email this weekend about a mom cat in need of rescue who is not more than a kitten herself. That shouldn't happen, kittens shouldn't have kittens, but if you don't spay your female cat in time it can happen.

4 - 5 months is a good time for most cats; especially males because it's really not an invasive procedure.

My Mourek was done at around 4.5 months, none too soon because he was already showing interest in my older female kitties (spayed). It was not appreciated by them, to say the least, haha!
