My feral foster cat Leon is at the vet today with a possible urinary blockage. I have dealt with cats with crystals and infections, but never a blockage. I know he will have to be on perscription food from here on out, but I have a couple questsion for others with more experience.

First, he is only 2 years old. I know it can happen any time, but does his young age mean he is more likely to have continued issues?

Second, I know it can be related to food. Has anyone had and issues with Natural balance Green Pea and Chicken causing crystals? That or Earthborn? I did try Earth born for about a week and none of my cats would touch the stuff.

any help would be appreciated.

Your cat may not need to be on prescription food for life. It really depends on what was causing the blockage in the first place. Was a urinalysis done? Blockages can occur from crystals/stones, infections, mucus, inflammation alone. The prescription food will only help with certain types of crystals that can be dissolved through urine pH acidification.

Male cats who get blocked are more prone to re-blocking, but they can be helped with diet. If you are feeding dry food at all, you really need to consider moving to an all wet meaty diet, no carbs. If you would like to learn more about the diet and urinary tract health link, please visit http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth. Written by a vet, it really does a good job at explaining why cats need a species-appropriate diet.

They are going to do a urinalysis today. I'm not sure if they will take the urine throu cysto or place the catheter first. Either way he is going to be sedated. I never thought I'd say this but I'm glad he wanted to pee on the floor. I might not have known otherwise.

So the official word yesterday was that he did have a blockage. I guess they had a hard time even cathing him because there was so much setiment & debris. I haven't heard about the final results but they left the cath in over night & if he is peeing well today he can come home.
