Does anybody have one? Would you recommend having one? Any thoughts or ideas you could give me?

Rick suggested that we buy a food saver; he's been after me now for quite a while to get one and I keep putting it off. I try to rotate what's in the freezer and I try to be very careful about wrapping/bagging meats and produce. But he mentioned again last night that he thinks it would be a good idea.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Someone in the raw subforum recommended the Gamesaver Deluxe, so I've been looking at my options. I don't remember who said it, but maybe he/she will see this and tell us why it's the best ;). Sioux Falls will have a Costco later this year so I may hold off on buying one until then.

We're on our second in about 30 years. They're great if you garden, because you really can fit more in the freezer, and it's so easy to bag portions of different sizes (for soup vs. a side dish, for example). I don't use it for meat or leftovers, mainly because it's too much trouble to get it out for such small quantities. Meat goes in freezer bags, and leftovers in containers that go can straight from the freezer into the microwave.

I have an older Phillips one.  I used to use it a whole lot and then I got lazy!  Mine has a roll of double layer "bags".  You pull out the size you want like you would with plastic wrap, and then press down on the lid and the hot wire seals and cuts the bag from the roll.  You put your food into the bag, then position the open end over the wire, with the vacuum tube inside the bag.  Then you lightly press the lid, the vacuum sucks out the air and once the air is out, you press more firmly on the lid and the hot wires seal the bag.  Rather tedious.  I find it faster to just use store bought freezer bags and suck the air out with a straw.
