hi my cat harry has had to have a kidney removed a week ago the kidney had died basically, he came home was happy and very well then 7 days later started throwing up again, and became constipated again, I say again because this has been happening every week for 4 weeks they thought the vomiting and not pooing were as a result of the bad kidney so were surprised when it happened again. back to the vets who ran all the tests his remaining kidney is funtionally as it should be, his liver and bllod cells are all as they should be, so no infection etc, the only thing they can find is protine in his urine, they think he may have high blood pressure from only having one kidney, he has been put on a chicken only diet, to see if it his food that is causeing the vomiting and not pooing, has anyone had a simular situation to this or a cat with only one kidney, the vets are very good but not as good as someone who has gone through this thanks in anticipation jackie and harry

I would definitely look to the food. If he was fed any dry food, this can cause mild chronic dehydration which can be constipating and be hard on the kidneys. Check out www.catinfo.org for more info. Does he vomit right after eating (regurgitation of food) or between meals (liquid only)? What chicken only diet is on now?

hi yes he did have dryed and wet food but the vet has said just cooked chicken only nothing else to see if this stops the vomiting, if it does then they can start and look for the right food for him, his vomiting is about and hour after food and is like a paste, thanks for replying

Gosh, I'm not sure I recall hearing anyone say they've had their cat's kidney removed here on TCS.  Lots of kidney cats here, but not familiar with this particular issue.

Might be your Vet is going to be the best source of information this time
.  I agree that experience is helpful, just not sure anyone here has this particular experience.  Maybe though....you just never know.

Sounds good, though, that the remaining kidney seems to be functioning up to par.  Hopefully it is just a matter of finding the right food (sounds like chicken is NOT the right food). Are the giving him anything for the high BP?  That's critical to address, although it should not be the cause of the vomiting and constipation.  But it can cause blindness if not addressed.

hi thanks, they are still checking if his blood pressure is high they cant take his blood pressure hes a bit naughty they have to sedate him to get anything done, so they are doing another urine test for that, the chicken is what they have recommended as he was eating gormet gold pates and james wellbelved biscuits, they think his kidney died from a road accident 2 years ago when his kidney was swollen and traumatised he had to have a blood transfusion then so hes been through it a bit poor lad hes only 4 jackie
