Hi, my babys name is Alvin and he just turned 10 months old and he fractured his radius in his front right leg 3 and a half weeks ago I took him to the vet and they put a splint on it and the first night home Alvin somehow managed to get out of the ecollar and splint so I took him back the next morning and they resplinted it and this stayed for the next 3 weeks but at his check up yesterday he had to have his bandages changed and when I brought him home again the bandages just come off as I'm getting him out of the carrier and his little toes start to bleed so I took him back the next morning and now its the middle of the night and his cast has come off again alas I have exhausted my paycheck at his vet and do not have enough to take him back for the third time in three days is there anything I can do at home so that he doesn't do any damage to the leg? Thank you

sorry you didn't get any answer sooner, and I don't know if I will be much help either.

I would try to wrap that leg in something, maybe an elastic bandage if you have one. then put a sock over that. and keep a hard plastic e-collar on him. and put him in something that he can't run around. like a cat carrier lined with blankets. You'll have to take him out after a while to see if he needs to use the litterbox.
But maybe this would at least work until morning . I would think the vets should fix that cast for free since it came off immediately when you got him home which sounds like it was not put on correctly.

If you are having trouble keeping a hard e-collar on, despite having the right size and adjusted to the best fit for him, and with a long wide shoestring, strip of gauze etc. threaded through the loops and tied securely, I would get an H-style harness and also put ties between the harness strap round the body and loops on the side of the e-collar. If you need to improvise right now and don't have a harness, you could tie something around his body behind his front legs, and then tie the e-collar to that on both sides of him.

You know, you can negotiate the bills. They could just automatically be charging you, but if you talk to the doctor, they'll knock off at least the office visit fee.

I have a cat who had surgery on his leg, and split his stitches twice, and twice I had to bring him back in when they not only stitched him up but trimmed his skin, and they didn't charge me for the follow up visits. I thought the original price of the surgery was high, but no charge for the follow ups definitely evened it out.

Call and talk to the vet. See if there's anything you can do, and if not, see if he can give you a discount on seeing your cat.
