Switching to Wet and Raw- concerned cats aren't getting enough

So I recently switched to a new wet and took dry out of my kitties food completely. The end goal here is an almost all raw diet with wet sometimes too.

They are now eating the Tiki Cat (chicken varieties only) well if I mix in a little dollop of Chicken and Chicken broth baby food and a little water to make it like a gravy, however they are not getting as much as the label says. Both cats together get about 1-1.5 cans a day and per the can they should EACH be getting 1.5 cans a day. I have tried other wets and do want them to have Before Grain and Wellness as a very common rotation but right now they are by far preferring the Tiki Cat so because of my concerns and the fact that they are still adjusting to Tiki Cat I have them just eating that right now. They are fed 3 times a day and they will usually leave a little left in the bowl. I have been scoring them like we did at the vet office and they average at 8.5-9/10.

That being said, even if they eat 10/10 it is not enough according to the can.

I'm really concerned because even when they were on their "favorite" wet (royal canine) with Royal Canine dry they just did not really eat that much and would get the most by picking throughout the day. They were dry-food lovers but I have been wanting to do this switch for awhile and they seem to be adjusting well mentally and physically to the wet food only.

They do seem to be getting the hang of eating more at once and learning that I will take the food away, but at this point I'm just trying to feed as frequently as I can when they are hungry (sometimes feeding 4 times a day if I do one feeding in the middle of the night when I am up feeding the bottle babies). They are getting lots of Pure Bite treats as well, and then the baby food remember- but are they in danger here? I'm extra concerned since Tiki Cat has a very low fat content that their bodies aren't used to as it is. I feel like my one cat looks a little slimmer possible. They both seem more active.

I want to start switching to raw completely, should I try mixing a little of that in with their Tiki Cat wet for the extra nutrients and fat and see if they will eat that? And then as time goes on just start increasing raw:wet ratio? I have Nature's Variety wet since they had that at a local store, but I want to order some Rad Cat in the next few days.

They are not overweight but I do expect them to slim out a little and become a little "leaner" once we switch to raw completely. I just don't want any quick and dangerous weight change due to this switch.

Thanks in advance for any help

I forget, how old are your kitties and how much do they weigh? Are you talking about the small cans (about 3oz) or the large cans (about 6oz) of Tiki? If the small cans, that's definitely not enough food for 2 kitties. If the large cans, that might be enough along with the other stuff. Rather than the can guidelines which are usually too high for indoor neutered cats, try to go by calories. You want to aim for about 20 calories per pound of ideal weight daily. So a ten pound cat should have about 200 calories daily, adjusted up or down as necessary for activity level.

Transitioning a cat from free feeding to scheduled feeding is very tough. Sometimes it takes cats a long time to start eating enough at meal times. You have to be careful during this transition and make sure they are getting at least 1/2 to preferably 2/3 of their caloric needs or they risk developing fatty liver.

I would start adding some raw into their Tiki to see if they like it, but given that they're not eating a lot right now, be careful to not turn them off to Tiki. If they won't eat Tiki with raw, don't try to force it at this point. Let them have Tiki by itself. Maybe you don't even want to mix the raw in yet, just put a little raw next to the Tiki and let them get used to it.

The large cans which are 6 oz. My kitties are both going on 2 . Isabella is 8.68# as of today and Chloe is 10.63# ad of today. Shnizzle / Issy is smaller framed but they are about the same as far as build goes and percent fat on their body goes roughly. I really should have weighed them during this whole process daily.

Okay thank you. The can directions seemed SO high! I doubt they would ever eat that much. Anyway I am especially concerned with Fatty Liver so just want to make sure we are on track. I will have to compute the calories once i get back home. ill definitely do everything you suggested and I think it is wise to put raw on the side so I don't turn them off Tiki since then I am pretty screwed since we tried a lot of foods to find One they could stand during this transition.

The can directions are really guidelines, and usually err on the high side.  So, I would let the cats be the judge (if they walk away from the food after eating some, assume they are full and self-regulating) and their weight be your judge (their weight now seems okay to me, monitor for gain and especially loss).

@Ritz - While normally I would agree whole-heartedly with your statement above, because they are switching to scheduled feedings and only eating about 3-4.5 oz of Tiki chicken each daily, which is a lower calorie/fat food, I do think they need more calories. Most indoor cats seem to eat about 5.5-6 oz of canned daily. Definitely agree that monitoring their weight is the best gauge. If they're at a good weight but start losing or gaining weight, then you know you need to adjust accordingly.

They are losing too fast.. Way too fast. My one lost 1.28 pounds in only two days. The other lost .66 pounds. They have been eating good and I just tried feeding now but my one turned her nose up. They just don't seem to want to eat at this time which is why I was feeding early morning then at night and then once in the middle of the night. I know they are hungry because they will go after my dogs hard food now sometimes.
No luck with raw but I'm still offering it separately. I'm going to try to get them to eat some BG or Well was since the cat content is higher and if she won't ill mix some baby food in there for now. Do you think I should give a tiny but of dry and slowly decrease? I'm really concerned and really want to get them to wet and raw safely.

Just offered before grain and she seems to really like it. She went running when she smelled it after acting strangely non-excited about me being in the kitchen. She did leave it after about thirty seconds but I usually leave their wet out for half and hour and they will go back to it. I'm going to see if they will both eat more of that tonight than they would eat of the Tiki Cat.

If they're losing weight too fast because they're not eating enough canned, I would offer some dry. However only a measured portion of enough calories to get them to their total daily caloric needs and at their regularly scheduled feeding time.

DO keep a close eye on their weight; that amount of weight lost that fast is alarming.

In interest of full disclosure, I have an eating disorder; so I am kind of touchy about fat/skinny cats.  Just my luck Ritz doesn't really self-regulate, and I still think Meows mean Feed Me.

Give them enough dry food to meet their caloric requirements (weigh and measure).  You could also see if they like higher caloric wet food.  Cats are finiky--maybe they'll like the Before Grain/Wellness now.

Aside from switching food.  My cat who's 5 years old loves dry food. Last year we moved houses and now we have a 2 story house where my cat now is more active and he did lose weight which concerned me a lot. My vet suggested to give him kitten food with his adult food as its more nutritional. Ever since I always buy both Adult and kitten food and mix them together 2/3 adult food 1/3 kitten food (he only eats dry).

A vet told me that unless it is stated otherwise the recommended feeding amounts on pet food labels assume that the animal has not been neutered/spade.
