so, 7 months ago I've had my thyroid removed (due to Thyroid Cancer). All's well as can be expected.

I'm wondering.. 7 months later, I am feeling sore by the scar area.. feels cramped or like someone hit me in the throat. I'm wondering if it's scar tissue still healing/forming? I am not finding anything googling (all scar related info)

Is it common for people to feel discomfort so many months after surgery as minor as this one? my next appointment is in October. If I'm feeling worse, I will call for sooner appointment

I haven't had this particular surgery but I have had several surgeries.  I haven't had increased pain this long after surgery.  I think I would call and ask about it because I think that is unusual.

Sometimes, people who have undergone surgery have adhesions. These are essentially types of tissue that cover the area of your scar. I am presuming -though this is never wise to do but your description sounds like it -that you had a thyroidectomy?? This is not my area of expertise as a physician tho as an oncologist, I have had patients with this surgery due to thyroid cancer. (Unsure what the etiology of your problem was and it may not be relevant) . The only concern I have is adhedions are more common with abdominal or pelvic surgery than thryroid operations.

Sometimes, not long postop, people recover yheir (your) sensory cutaneous nerves from the cervical plexus may have been compressed or injured during he incision. This makes the area very tender -sore- and is actually pretty typical not long after the procedure. Still, yours was awhile ago so that does suggest the possibility of adhesions or some other issue.

Adhesions can become larger or tighter over time. Symptoms or other problems may occur if the adhesions cause an organ or body part to twist, pull out of position, or be unable to move as well.If I were you, I would contact your surgeon or GP and explain what is going on and have itcexamined. Have you had radiation treatments? Those can also create that kind of hypersensitive tender feeling there. However, do not depend on a doctor like me who cannot see or examine you. Pls contact your own doctor and find out what is going on.

Adhesions are really not serious.tho sometimes surgery to repair it will be required. But I do not want yo jump ahead and guess. That would be unprofessional to say the least! And it may well be something else entirely depending on your medical history. Good luck!! I hope it can be repaired easily. IF you start to feel nauseated and are vomiting a lot, I would call your doctor ASAP!!! That can cause an obstruction (something I experienced and thought -as did a surgeon colleague (who also was ready based on a scan -to suggest stomach cancer tho I disagreed with him even if I am board certified in hematology and pediatrics and he had conductress numerous abdominal surgereies.

Sorry I submitted too soon and Yikes...it is long enuf as is! But in my case, it turned out to be an obstruction due to an ulcer but undid spend 3 wks in the icy preop on an nh tube and TPN (nutrition delivered by external IVs et al through a cut down down surgically. The usual endoscopy and just did not work -where a gasterenterologists attempts to place a small STENT to end the blockage. So I had ti have a partial gastrectomy (ie over 1/2 of my stomach removed) . The upside was losing Wright tho it was also the downside since too much weight miss andcdehydration can lead to a severe problem with one 's electrolytes which led yo a heart murmur I have acting up! So it was a fun few mos -and I thought I had the flu lol. That was awhile ago and alas, Wright loss that hoes quickly also returns quickly lol Not that I am overweight. In retrospect, I shd have requested a cosmetic procedure re Ny stomach but seriouslyvi went into an or as an oncologist who knows what cancer does and woke up to discover -despite living on what I called the ice chip diet (ie no food durcto nh tube & TPN) that it was just an ulcer so I was relieved.

I fount that is your case and far from it. You are discussing your thyroid so I would have your doctor endocrinologist and surgeon look at it. Bestvof luck!! Let me know what happens!!

I did not see where the pain just began. That may well be something new. As before, if you feel nausea -severely - get to an ER -or if the pain is unbearable. But see your doctor!!

I also just npticed it was duevto cancer -one of the ones with high cure rates. I must be tired. Sorry!! I think you need to see your oncologist as well - make certain there is no metastisis -return of oncogenes or cancer cells. Promise me you will gp asap!! It is unlikely to be cancer (even the hormonal changes caused by the loss of a thyroid can lead to pain) but it is best to know right away for certain urge sooner you can be treated, the better if it is that.

I've had thyroid cancer too - last October.  Even though everything was clear after having it removed, my doctor wanted to see me in six months.  All clear there, too, but I have another appointment in October.

I would call the doctor and check.  It probably is adhesions or some other way your body may be "over healing.'  But I'd call just to put your mind at ease.

Good luck - I'll be praying for you!

You've had such a comprehensive reply from Abisiobhan.... I was thinking adhesions as well.

I've had many operations in my abdominal cavity and it is a mass of adhesions.. not sure how it works in the throat though.

Also I have Hashimoto's and have negligible thyroid function now.  For some reason I still get a sense of fullness and discomfort in the thyroid area, but that's probably just the auto-immune response.

You know how we're always telling people to take their cats to the vet if they're unsure about anything?

One of my students had thyroid surgery last year and had terrible adhesions, so much so that she had to go to a physiotherapist for several weeks. I didn't have any after my thyroid surgery, but did have them after my hysterectomy. I'd had bad ones from endometriosis prior to the surgery, which made it complicated, but they managed to "clean up" before and during the surgery. Six months after the hysterectomy I had abdominal pain, and sure enough, the problem was more adhesions. Surgery was suggested, but I didn't have it, because I figured I'd just get more.
