My husband heard a kitten yelling outside this morning. After locating the little guy, we searched for Mama, and even waited with him for a while to see if she would come for him...no luck.  Such sweet little tabby! Eyes closed, umbilical cord still attached, and lungs of an opera singer!!  We ran to the pet store and got him the kitten formula, and he ate well.  I stimulated him to go potty, and he did great.  We both work full-time, and I know he will need lots of care.  Can anyone recommend a shelter that has the ability to take him in, or fosters that specialize in kitten care?

I would call Chicago's anti-cruelty society. They can probably recommend an organization if they don't have any available fosters in your area (though they might). Number is (312) 644-8338. Good luck with this little guy! Thank you so much for rescuing him!

Be sure the place who takes him HAS fosterers who are ready...  A common shelter will just pts him.

I mean, they may say; Oh sure, dont worry, we take care of him, a vet will check up too... Just to calm your conscience...  So you must listen in between the lines too...

You yourself cant?  It IS lotsa of work, but you had already began so well... It is perhaps YOUR quest?   And it feels so well if you succeed. A real reward. Especielly if you can keep the cat.

Observe, cat mom in the wild can almost never be with them 24/7, nursing exactly every second hour, sharp.  Usually they most leave her kittens even several hours, to find food or a new nest, and so on...

So although not optimal, it is not SO touchy with nursing on exact hours.  And you and DH can perhaps rush in  once a working day each?

Tell your bosses what it is, make it a real touching need OR a little humoristic... With any luck your boss will admit you are away some extra during the first two weeks...

Tx for caring!

 Good luck!

Here is a page with a list of shelters in the Chicago area  http://www.treehouseanimals.org/site/PageServer?pagename=caring_additional_resources_shelter_list

It is on the website of a wonderful shelter ( actually 2) callled Treehouse Humane Society,  they have 2 cageless cat shelters  on the north side of Chicago.   But that is not the closest to you so I gave you their link listing other shelters including in NW suburbs and North suburbs.

The ones with an asterisk are at least nominally "no kill".

In the meantime  here is a link to a great site with the basics  for what to do immediately to care for him/ her.  ( It sounds like you do know something about it,  but  I figure it can't hurt to give you the link.)   http://kitten-rescue.com/

Being kitten season , shelters are  really stretched  and they might ask if you would be able to foster the kitten yourself for a while but it sounds like that is not possible if you both work full time ( if it's the same hours) .

Thank you for saving this little guy,  now I hope you can find a shelter / rescue/ foster .

If you find a shelter or rescue group to take him, would be good if you can make a donation to them.

Hey Stefan,  re telling the bosses... if they are real animal lovers they might even let you bring him to work wearing him under your shirt in a little pouch  ( it tells how to make one on the kitten-rescue.com site.

I actually know someone who did that.   I guess it depends on your job.   I mean if your job is operating a jackhammer, well, that might not be so good .  Or if you are an attorney and you're in court arguing a case ,  the judge might not be amused if a meow keeps coming from your chest.
