I have this four and a half to 5 week old kitten.  He was given to us from somebody who isn't a cat person and was unable to hand raise it due to work.  Well I have been bottle feeding it.  I have been stimulating it and it pees and sometimes poops.  He doesn't poop all the time.  He poops every other day usualy.  But he isn't hard in the tummy or straining so I'm not concerned with that.  I am concerned over the fact that he is around 5 weeks old and still not peeing and pooping on his own.  Is this normal?  Is there something I can do to help him start going on his own?  Another thing is I have been trying to feed him sollids.  Took him to the vet he ate some kitten solid can food.  But that was 2 weeks ago.  Came home bought some for him and he wont touch the stuff.  He sniffs it and walks in it, but wont eat any of it.  I have even tried just putting his milk in a small saucer so he can lick it up that way to get him use to not using the bottle so much but he doesn't want anything to do with it if it isn't in the bottle.  Is this normal?  What else can Id o to get him to start eating solids and drinking his milk from a saucer?  I know kittens develope at there own pace just like babies do, but 5 weeks old seems to old to not be using the bathorom on his own or starting to eat solids.  PLEASE HELP!

Orphans tends to be later, they dont have mom as example, and her not even any siblings.

If you live in USA, they say baby food, Gerber nr 1, turkey or chicken, are practically irrestesible...

Good luck!

I've had some orphans take longer, especially when they are single and don't have siblings on top of already being motherless. How often are you bottle feeding him? As in how many hours does he go before you put wet Infront of him.
With picky babies I mix wet and beechnut baby food ( a meat only variety) I start off adding a lot in addition to watering it down a lot and then as time goes on decrease the baby food an water. When I first give it to them it is a thick liquid with about one half baby food and one half canned food. Warming it up will help with some kittens.
My kittens have always really liked natural choice wet and royal canine baby cat . The kind that are really mushed and can be easily mixed into a smooth liquid ( I even will add a small amount of baby food to bottles sometimes to get kittens started on the taste).
When you give it to him put your finger in the food and Put it up to him to lick. If he doesn't lick it put a little in his mouth so he tastes it. Usually once they taste it they will become interested and from there I just keep using my finger and guiding them until they are drinking from the dish. You may have to whipe his nose during and after if he gets wet all over it so keep as eye on him right at the beginning. Also a lot of kittens have trouble weaning because they want that alone time with mom so being there and talking to him when he starts eating wet will encourage him and show him that he can still get mommy time doing something else other than drinking from the bottle. Almost all of them are extremely messy at first so you will need to clean up afterward- I use puppy pads all of the time under food bowls to help keep the mess to a minimum.

As far as him pottying on his own, just give it time. I will skip stimulating them one feeding and see if they go on their own by the next feeding since sometimes they won't potty on their own simply because we are already doing it for them. I start with puppy pads at three weeks since I've had some kittens start very young but by five weeks I will be using non clumping litter in a shallow box or pan. Make sure he is in a pen or small area until he is potty trained to use the box. Also make sure you aren missing anything- maybe he IS going but it is soaking into his bedding, etc and he isn't using the litter box yet? Some kittens will have accidents especially at first just always place their accidents in the box so they learn. I will just rub my hand around in the box and put them Infront of it for them to investigate when I first add it.

Also you can add baby food to the milk to make a 'milk shake' as I call them but a this point he really needs those meats from the wet so I would focus on that the most.obviously he does need milk still for fluids so don stop suddenly. I will usually give a bottle a day until six weeks as I let my kittens decide when they are done and the transition isn't extrem. Most kittens will still be nursing from mom once a day or so at six to seven weeks anyway and I try to stick as closely to what would happen if they DID have a mom
