In May I took in a stray cat, when I took her to the vet she could not confirm a pregnancy,  even though I suspected one, and went ahead and gave her a full round of vaccinations.  I was not warned of any potential risks or problems with the vaccines.  When she was obviously showing and I called to cancel the spay apt the vet was rather unpleasant with me and informed me of the serious risks.  I have since found a new vet as I just can't trust that vet.  She was probably at 22 days at the time of her vet apt and vaccinations.  I found this site as I was searching for anyone else that has been through this.  It was a stressful time as I expected the worst and worried about the health of my cat, Myka.

About a week and a half before she gave birth she started having a slightly bloody mucusy discharge.  I took her to the new vet and they put her on an antibiotic, confirmed there was at least three heartbeats and we were no more than a week away from having kittens.  The bloodiness went away but the mucusy discharge did not.  The day before giving birth it got bloody again and at first she showed no signs of giving birth.  She never lost her appetite and began eating more than ever the last few days leading up to birth.  Going from 3/4 - 1 cup of food a day to 1 1/2 cups.  In addition to her heaping teaspoon of baby food morning and evening.  (The baby food was great for mixing in her antibiotic and not having to fight her twice a day to give it via a syringe).  She finally started looking interested in her nesting box and spending a lot of time in it.  I was sure she would have them that night, but no she spent the night sleeping close to me in bed.  I spent most of the next day with her on the sofa as she would get restless if I left her.  Sure enough that evening she started contractions around 8 - 8:30 sitting on the sofa between me and my husband.  (Luckily it's a leather sofa and I had towels down)  It was a good two hours before kitten number 1 was born.  And a good two hours before kitten number two was born.  Kittens three and four came quicker.  We did help break the sac on the first kitten and it took her a little while to start breathing and moving.  The others came out a bit more lively and active.  When we thought she was done we moved them to the birthing box.  After we went to bed she did have a fifth kitten that didn't survive.

She cleaned up the kittens and placenta's but on the forth kitten we did tie and cut the cord and remove the placenta just to help her out as she was taking more and more time to clean up and we wanted to help her out.  It was an amazing experience to be that involved with her and handling the kittens moments after birth. And I'm very relieved to have healthy undeformed and alive kittens.

Congrats!  Well done everybody!

I suppose you do your reading through our threads and articles?  And weighting them kittens everyday in grammes?  This is a fantastic tool to notice any problems, and if they are OK.

Change the bedding every day, and use preferably fleece or flannel. Old towels often used may fasten in the kittens nails.   You can have old newspapers under the bed, so the nest bottom never gets soaked.

Keep reporting and asking!

Good luck!
