About a week ago I noticed that Jasper had started growing his adult lower canine teeth alongside his baby teeth. The baby teeth are not even feeling loose yet and the new adult teeth are almost as big as the baby teeth already! I took him to the vet today for his vaccination. As I expected, I will have to take him back to have the baby teeth extracted. That appointment has been made for next Thursday. Jasper is about 5 months old. I'm pretty sure the top canine teeth are still babies with no sign of the adult teeth yet - hoping they will not need extraction soon as well.

So I was wondering what to expect when I get him home on Thursday. I have to start fasting him at 10pm Wednesday night before taking him in on Thursday morning and leaving him for the day. Will he be pain after the teeth are removed? Will it last long? Or, because they're baby teeth, will it be relatively painless? Can I expect him to be off his food for a few days? Will the anaesthetic have any side effects that night? Any tips on things I can give him to help him recover if this is going to be a pain for him? Thanks.

Aw, poor little guy!

Any time my kitties have had teeth extracted, the vet said they were on the pain meds they needed and I didn't have to administer any at home. None of mine seemed to need further pain medication after that. Spooky would go off her food for a day or two; Chumley didn't skip any meals, and was starving when he got home. :lol3: (He had three teeth extracted). I did offer reduced amounts of food at first, and meals more frequently than normal for Chumley that first evening back, because they may vomit it up due to the effects of the anesthesia. He also wanted to drink some water, which is very unusual for him. So you might want to try offering him water before food. :heart2:

So I think it really just depends on the kitty!

Ok thanks. I will wait and see how he is when he comes home. He was neutered before I got him so I don't know how he will react to the anaesthetic. He normally eats like a champion so I'll give him something he really likes. He seems 'off' today which I suppose is from the vaccination yesterday.

I'm now wondering if having them extracted at this point is the right thing to do. From reading on the internet, it seems the professional advice is to have them extracted as soon as possible. On the other hand, it seems people who have had experience with it often waited and the teeth just fell out.

For one thing, I don't expect it to be cheap and I'm just hoping it will be under $300. I could buy a lot of kitty toys with that money
More importantly, I don't want him to undergo surgery unless it's necessary. If the same thing happens to the top canines, that will be two general anaesthetics in a short amount of time. The vet didn't say much except that the teeth should've fallen out by now and will have to come out. But if waiting a couple more weeks to a month posed no problem for his dental development I think that would be the better option. I think I will phone the vet tomorrow and ask more questions. Sorry, just thinking out loud.
