Low blood glucose in Mazy's blood work.

Could fructooligosaccharides in the probiotic cause a low blood glucose reading? Vet is not overly concerned and thinks it is more likely a..clotting? (I think is what she said)....issue, and we will retest with a simple ear stick in a couple of weeks.

But I've read a few things about avoiding fructooligosaccharides in diabetic cats (I think, I don't always understand what I read:lol3:) so wondered if this might be a problem with Mazy.

I've thought of switching her to the Natural Factors Jennie takes, but she throws up every time I give it to her.

Mazy is not diabetic. Vet said low BG could be an indication of pancreatitis, though, but she thinks 'probably not' in Mazy's case, though of course Mazy's regurgitation issue does bring it to the mind sometimes. But without any other symptoms......

I've also read fructooligosaccharides, while they aid in the absorption of calcium, can cause digestive upset and gas. Mazy does sometimes have a gassy tummy, but not ...right after having the probiotic.

According to the information on this site (the piece is referenced, it's just all the studies are in humans), it states the FOS do not affect blood glucose levels: http://nutrition.advancepetfoods.com.au/speedyvet/library.asp?page=19

From NYU, a summary: http://www.med.nyu.edu/content?ChunkIID=108304

Supporting the claims that FOS increase growth of healthy bifido bacteria is this study in cats: http://m.journalofanimalscience.org/content/89/5/1376.abstract

For a different perspective on FOS and cats, here's an interesting piece by Michelle Barnard: http://www.blakkatz.com/catsarentweasels.html

FYI, the gas created wouldn't be in her tummy, and it wouldn't be right after eating it. It would be in her gut, as a result of being a substrate for (good) bacterial growth.

Thank you Laurie. Okay. Then since she can't seem to tolerate the other probiotic, she will stay on the ProViable. Jennie has been on the Natural Factor for almost a year, and Queen Eva is starting to get it once in a while and tolerating it.

But Mazy throws the Natural Factor right back up. Maybe it's the lactose, I don't know, she's just so darn sensitive to stuff.

:heart3: You know, I'll have to do some searching. Sugarcatmom posted links to one or more probiotics (human) that had no lactose...

I've never googled "vegan probiotics." Wonder what would turn up?
