Am I feeding them enough?

My kittens are about 3 and a half months, and I am just wondering if I am feeding them enough. They have a bowl of dry food (earthborn) sitting out, and they get a can nature's variety moist 5.5oz a day (half in the morning, half at night). Is that enough? Because the Otter (a runt) always acts like she's starving.

Sorry, how many kittens do you have? Generally at that age, they should eat as much as they want since they're still growing. Wet food is much better for cats, so if you can add more wet and still leave some dry out, that would be good.

Well, 2.75oz each of wet food doesn't seem like a lot for a growing kitten. Otter may prefer wet food (smart kitty) and not be eating a lot of the dry. If you can, I would try to feed two cans a day. Most canned foods are much higher in animal protein and fat which satisfies cats much more than the higher carb dry foods. Dry foods have a lot of carbs that cats have no nutritional need for.

Righty-o then. Do you guys know a cheap but healthy moist food then? The Nature's Variety is expensive and I only bought enough for a can a day until pay day.

Fancy Feast classics or even the Friskies pates are ok. try and stay away from gravy types in these brands though. I put in bold the types to get to emphasize them
Pet Smarts Authority brands are pretty good also. Have you thought about trying raw? It can actually work out to be pretty inexpensive.

Nature's Variety is pretty pricy.  My kitten is about a month older and really eating quite a bit now and is growing like crazy in the 3 weeks or so we have had her.  We are feeding Trader Joes Chicken and Trader Joes Turkey mostly while we try out other brands of canned food.  We are trying out Authority which my kitten seems to love.  We have also tried Wellness and Merrick.  Other brands I am looking at Weruva, Fromm, By Nature Organics, Hound and Gatos, Dave's and Ziwipeak Dried Raw and Stella&Chewy's Freeze Dried Raw.  We may eventually venture into frozen raw food.  I found one website that priced out different feeding options and some frozen raw food is cheaper than canned.

I am hoping to order a few flats of can food online hopefully with a good coupon code and free shipping.  My goal is to come up with a rotation of several flavors and brands of can food  to minimize the effects of any potential recalls or nutritional deficits in any one brand.

I feed my previous cats mostly dry and just a little bit of can because that is what I was told was better for them.  Both suffered from kidney failure that lead to their deaths.  Partly I believe due to their premium brand food being recalled (some pets died and other suffered kidney damage) and also due to the fact I was feeding them primarily dry food.  When I got this new kitten I started researching and found out that even cheaper canned foods are likely a healthier option than the premium dry foods I used to feed my cats.

Fantastic links. I just looked at each one quickly, but have them bookmarked to go back to. The first two are new to me. The third one is a standard around here.

The price comparison was done by TCS member LDG (Laurie) who is such an invaluable help for all things on cat nutrition!
