so my male cat blake out a yr old got a sneezy cold but other than sneezing and sleeping he seems fine, my female blare(slightly younger) caught w.e he had but instead of sneezing it seems her nose is stuffy and its causeing her breathing problems, she breaths in and when her mucus causes her nose to clog when she does so she seems to freak and sniff out hard. shes sleeping a lot, i think shes shivering but its hard to tell the difference from weezing because of the mucus in her nose. i put vapor rub on her throat to help her, it seemed to help her a bit. but being shes a clean finicky cat she rubbed it off her fur onto the covers. so..yea there goes that plan. my kitten also seems sick, well hes sleeping alot, no sneezing or weezing yet. being there all sleeping a lot, there kinda keeping anymore germs from eachother, they follow me into the bathroom so im hoping the steam from my showers is helping they sit on the bathroom shelfs and counters when i shower. are there any herbal home remedies to help them? i live by and herbalist so i might be able to afford it. sadly atm we are kinda unable to afford the vet, we are trying to save money for another slightly larger studio apartment so 60 bucks for 3 cats anibiotics will take out a large chunk of that money and yes i know i shouldnt own cats if i cant pay for there care, but we both had a URI so we are a bit tight on money spending all we had on out own anibiotics now the cats are sick and rent is due, all i can do is hope someone has some herbal recipes for me.

I'm sorry your cat is sick, and that you can't afford proper vet care.

You shouldn't really use stuff likes vapor's rub; cats can (and did) lick that off and digest it.  Yuck.

The only recommendation--other than calling/visiting the vet--is L-lysine.  You can find this supplement at any store, including Walmart or perhaps your herbalist.  (Sometimes grocery stores have 'buy one get one free' sales.)  The dose for a flare up of herpes/cold/URI is around 1,000 mg, though start off at around 500 to see how your cats handle L-lysine.

Your instinct about showers/steam is correct; you can also turn on the shower  and close to the door to make it steamy in that room, and then open the door and let your cats in.  (Unless they will stay in the room while the shower is on, then just let them stay there.)

Good luck!

L-lysine? never heard of it, but thank you. i will buy it asap. also yes my cats are very fascinated by water, not fond of it on them but will sit and swat or stare for hours at it pointlessly in mere contentment.

L-lysine is an amino acid that boots the immune system and is recommended for most URI in our kitties. I think most here who use it, divide the daily dose, and give 1/2 in am and 1/2 in pm.

I had a very sneezy/fluey pussycat for many years.

The steaming did wonders...

I would make a saline solution (1 flat teaspoon of pure salt.. not anti-caking agents.. dissolved in1/2 litre of warm water)

Then I'd get a dropper and slowly drop the solution into the corner of her eyes, for some time.  It will clean the eyes, but also go down into the nasal passages and help to cleanse and dry them.  She would often sneeze up some pretty grotty stuff at this stage.

Then I would get her carrier, put her in it, close the door and place a dish of just off the boil water in front of the door and cover the whole lot with a large towel, or whatever did the job.  I'd leave her there for quite some time (I would often put a few drops of lavender in the water which soothed her and acted as an antiseptic as well.)  It's really important to check that it isn't getting over hot or over steamy, but I never had a problem.

Then I'd bring her out, wipe her eyes, nose etc and sometimes do the saline drops again.

I'm telling you this in detail, as she was a very sick pussycat, and my vet was astounded at how this helped her.  Sometimes things would get very bad and she'd need antibiotics, but this did work wonders.

I must tell you a story, though... I was 'treating' my girl this way when a couple of neighbouring kids knocked on the door selling chocolates for their sports team.  They said "gee it smells nice in there" to which I replied "yes, I'm steaming the cat".

Of course it sounded perfectly normal to me, but they never looked at me in quite the same way from then on....

L-lysine was recommended to us by our vet when one of our kitties had a sneezing attack. The vet thought it might be a herpes flare up.  We gave it to him in treat form, several a day.  Within a couple of days he stopped sneezing and has been fine since then.  We have another kitty with herpes virus, she gets it in her eyes so I started giving her the treats, too.  What a difference!  The l-lysine  really helped clear up her infection, too.
