Hi,  my cat Loki was diagnosed earlier this month with having "Feline Idiopathic Cystitis". He was strainng alot and blood was present in his urine. He didn't have an infection or crystals and was not blocked. I knew it was stress related but not sure why. After alot of reading and research I determined in Loki's case it was caused by territorial anxiety. The vets put him on amytriptaline and I thought he was improving as i was cleaning up less spray marks. (yes Loki is fixed, done when he was approx 8 months, he started spraying last summer, he is 5 & 1/2 now) This spring he became very miserable and spent all his waking moments staring out the window and would become very stressed and would pace when he'd see neighbirhood cats in our yard.  My cats are inside mainly and only go out when someone is out to keep an eye as we live near a very busy street and I am scared of tgem getting hit.   Anyway.... turns out the reason there was no spraying was because Loki was blocked. I didnt realize right away as I thought he was still peeingby my shoes, turns out it was one of the others (I have 4 male cats). I took him to the vet Wed morning and Loki was very sick, his kidneys had started to shut down. The vet gave me 3 options, 1 was to sew a catheter in place and keep him for a couple days and it would cost about 1000, #2 was a catheter to flush him out, give fluids , start him on meds and send him home at a cost of 350 or #3 euthanise. I said wow a 1000 is alot and the vet said well why dont we just flush him out and send him home as it will be less stressful for Loki as well. It ended up being thecwrong decision (and costed 420), I ended up back at the vet the next morning. They hospitalized him and poor guy literally fought for his life for 4 days. I got to bring him home Sunday night heavily sedated but he was so happy to see us and be home. It us now Tues eve and I am wondering if he is ok. He sleeps 23 hrs a day and only gets up to eat, drink, and use the litter. I use clumping litter and his pees are the size of grapes but I will find 3-5 in each of my 4 litter boxes. He is on diazepam and another med for straining that also sedates. If anyone has gone thru a similar situation I would greatly appreciate any advice. Sorry fir theclong post and prob many typos.

Thank u very much. I am very new to this site and actually came across it while trying to find online info to help Loki. He is actually doing very good, I wasbstill extremely worried last night but in the last 24 hrs he has really perked up and is getting stronger. I took him back to the vet today and his bladder was small and empty.... Big relief as I was scared he may be reblocked which would have Been very bad for Loki as his kidneys can't take much more. So I'm praying he will pull thru this. I am very optimistic tho.

I am glad that Loki is doing better. I would try to address FIC with diet and stress relief. Species-appropriate diet is wet meaty food, no grains/veggies/fruits. No dry at all. Stress relief is different for every cat depending upon the stressors. More play time, Feliway diffusers, Rescue Remedy, more alone time with care giver, etc. may help.
