Just looking for opinions.  I have a cat who had kittens almost 2 months ago.  We're going to keep one of them, a male.  I have funding issues, so I'm going to have to get one of them neutered and then the second a bit later on.  Which would you do first - the mother or the male kitten?

Are there low cost neuter places so you could get them both done? In my city the humane society will do it for practically no money. I am in Canada but I know in the states there is a hotline you can call 1-800-248-7729 or the website (http://spayusa.org) that will connect you to a low coat clinic in your area.

Males are fertile for at least a few weeks until after surgery so you want him fixed ASAP because he will mate with his mother.

I really hope that you have arranged for all the adopters to fix their kittens as well.

Get Mom done NOW! She can already get pregnant again. Since males are fertile for WEEKS after neutering, spaying mom first will stop the chance of having kittens again very shortly.

Mom first so she doesn't get pregnant again. As long as you get him done before 6-7 months, you should be pretty safe as far as spraying and other tomcat behaviors. So have mamacat spayed now, and you'll have 4 months to save up for the baby :D.

You should get the female done as soon as possible.  She will go into heat again very soon if she hasn't already.  They sometimes go into heat while they are still nursing kittens and many females will pretty much stay into heat until they mate again.  I know a spay is usually a little more than a neuter but she needs to be done.  The male kitten needs to be done no later than six months.
