Hi,  looking for some advice re kitten weights,

My lovely cat Jinx gave birth to 5 kittens yesterday these are there weights from then and today

                      Saturday (day of birth)                      Sunday

Torti   -            109                                                 126

tabbi  -             103                                                109

Tabbi/White   - 118                                                 132

Ginger   -         110                                                 131

Ginger/white  -  110                                                 123

My question is the smallest tabbi has put on weight but not as much as the rest,  when I am through I do try and make sure this little one is attached but should I be worried by small weight gain or maybe give it another day?????

Thanks

Tabbi gained after all. I mean, the first day they do lose some, so to gain at all is more than it sounds,  so 6 grammes+ isnt too bad after all.

But of course, here you DO have your main suspict, the one you must observe extra.

Make sure you see him eating, not lying alone outside and getting cold, etc.

If necessary, let him nurse when the others are sleeping.

The others gain beautifully, above average.   :)

So, dont worry as yet, but observe extra yes. If he hasnt put on 10g tomorrow, do worry.

A beatuful example it is good to weigh them, and preferably in grammes.  You see the warnings signs immediately.

Good luck!

[edit made a typo, becoming unclear]

 Agree with Stefan's good advice.

Not surprising for a kitten to not gain so much the first day.  Not only have they just gone through being born , and have to change from automatically getting fed via the umbilical cord, to nursing,  but also the first milk (colostrum) is not as many calories as it will be after that.

It looks like the rest had an excellent gain for the first day!

And you know to keep an eye on the small Tabbi,  make sure he is nursing and is warm.

It is great you are weighing them.

Go Sox !!!!!!     Thanks for advice about waiting till kittens sleeping then helping smallest one to feed, definitely done the trick...  Amazed at their little personalities already, when they feed they climb over each other, 2 even had a little fight over a teat :)

Remember too that the weight will be different if they have just eaten vs before a meal. I know with my kittens it was uneven gain showing because of that. You don't always know when the most recent meal was.

 That's great!  Go Sox!

It definitely does help to try to sneak in some extra feedings for a smaller kitten when the others are sleeping and not competing.  and when you do that, see if he'll nurse off one of the back teats (closest to her back legs)  because those are often the ones with the most milk, or easier to get milk out of.

They are just gaining fabulously.

Well they certainly leaping and bounding with these weights  :)

Saturday (day of birth)                             Sunday                Monday                        Tuesday

Torti (smudge) -            109                                                126                     133                          158

tabbi  - (Sox)                103                                                109                     130  (woohoo)           149

Tabbi/White  (Sam)   -  118                                                 132                     150                          173 (piggy)

Ginger   (Star)-             110                                                 131                     144                          163

Ginger/white  (simba) -  110                                                 123                     137                          157

Can someone please advise how long I keep weighing them for,  is it a case of when they older its less often???  Also when do they start opening their eyes,  Found two little umbilical cords withered away and fell off....
